hi cheryl/jake --
first, enormous respect for how the secretary handled such a blatantly partisan attack today -- and for how no doubt you steered her, and breathed for her
have you thought about having a number of former ambassadors, and other former senior officials, send an open letter expressing surprise/concern about how so many on the panel failed to understand the normal relationship between ambassadors and the secretaries they serve, or in fact about how the department operates? i'd be happy to be part of crafting components of such a letter (though you may have others on staff who know this stuff), and certainly to sign it. let me know.
also, while i'm at it, if you're compiling a list of former ambs and other national security personnel who endorse the secretary, please make sure i'm at the top of the list. (i know that normally would be later in the process.)
the republicans did themselves and our country a disservice today -- and of consequence have energize those of us who know she's the right person for these responsibilities. with respect and appreciation, mike
