Hi Everyone
--
In preparation for next Friday's labor meeting I would like to outline some points around our labor outreach and some immediate needs going into next week.
Immediate Needs Before Next Friday: (Please see below for rationale)
1. AFT Teacher Town Hall-We are still working to lock this in. We provided October 2nd in Florida but the time frame of 2:45pm will not work for teachers, they are still in school. We will need other options for AFT/Randi for a event that starts no earlier then 4:30/4:45pm. Randi will likely be reaching out to Huma and John on this. Please let me know how if I can get together with scheduling in advance of that.
2. HRC connects with NEA President Lily Eskelsen Garcia (a call sheet has been submitted)
3. JP Calls to John Stocks and Three Big NEA State Presidents (Amanda and I will divide up the rest of the calls nationally)
4. Policy team prep for the Building Trades Executive Council before September 9th.
5. Thoughts on ATU Sanders Watch and HRC teletown hall request
Union Updates:
1. NEA-I believe with additional campaign work in September we have a good opportunity to lock in a early NEA endorsement in October. Just to note: The last time the NEA made this early of an endorsement was in 1974. This will be significant.
NEA Next Steps:
-HRC connects via phone with Lily Eskelsen Garcia
-JP connects with John Stocks via phone
-September 16th HRC Teletown Hall with NEA Members
-September: Senior staff connect with key NEA State Presidents and Executive Directors around early endorsement
-October 3rd: HRC presents to NEA Executive Board
2. Building Trades-Prep time will be needed in prep for HRC's Executive Council presentation. We are on track for a potential recommendation for endorsement by the Governing Board of Presidents after HRC's September 9th presentation. This recommendation will not represent individual union endorsements, those will roll out separately. A recommendation from the Board of Presidents has never happened before. In September I believe there will be 4-5 trades union to roll out endorsement and continue to build thru October.
3. AFSCME continues to be in a good place for September endorsement.
4. ATU-Yesterday the union informed me that they will be hosting a teletown hall with Sanders next week. They are requesting that HRC participate in her own teletown hall with members.
ATU Concern: I am concerned that ATU will move to endorse Sanders before we can schedule a HRC teletown hall. A potential AFSCME endorsement could break lose unions that have been close with Sanders. I would count ATU as one of those unions. The additional significance of a ATU endorsement is that they endorsed HRC in 2007. Sanders union watch list would also include APWU.
5. AFGE-This is a friendly union for us. They would like HRC to meet with their Executive Board and this will significantly move forward their endorsement process. They will move their board meeting to whereever it is convenient for HRC. Ideally this would be something we could lock down in October.
6. IAFF-We will need to lock in a October endorsement event date in Iowa with IAFF. We are on track here.

Is it possible to get one or two major building trades members to hold and release when ATU comes out for Bernie? Then at least the stories are mixed vs. the endorsement Bernie gets?
Are we still just worried about only ATU and APWU?

My concerns are just with ATU and APWU.
I'll hold the trades in pocket in prep for ATU. I think you're right that we should be prepared for ATU.
