Update
I wanted to touch base with you about march allocations. We have not received a plan from CDA or an accounting of jan and feb expenses. We have touched base with tom and susan and they have said documents are with the lawyers. CDA it appears have received resources from other places as they are up on the air in ohio and have done a test in PA. They are recieiving press on the ads and we are concerned with the way FFA is portrayed today in john marshalls blog ( see below) and yesterday in the hotline. http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/03/dem_third_party_group_dumps_14.php I will let you know once we have the plan in hand. We have no plans to move money until we have the plan in hand. Please let us know if you have questions. Thank you, Amy Sent via BlackBerry by AT&T

hey john. i know you're booked up with meetings in nyc -- but i just wanted to check in with you to see if you have any sense of timing on your deal, or strucutre? or when i could or should start talking to bauer or someone else over there? we will need to move quickly with board wrt to you and also mel. also, i leave for ireland on monday... i am bringing laptop and can totally work from there and call in etc... just a reminder. thx, d Debbie Fine General Counsel CAP/CAPAF Phone: 202.741.6253 Mobile: 917.373.8308 Fax: 202.682.1867
I spoke with marc elias and he thinks a letter could be done, but is unsure about it coming from you. With your position on the transition and the obama campaign's position on independent efforts he is not sure that is the right thing. He is going to talk to Debbie in the morning.
Sorry again about bothering you with that long email while you were traveling. I just wanted to let you know that I accepted the job at the Pentagon, and can't wait to start! Thank you, again, so much, for this great opportunity. I hope to be able to thank you in person some time soon!

Victoria and Jennifer will be ready to provide an update on Wednesday, November 23rd. John had said before he left for China he could come in person midday. My father is available after 12pm and I was waiting to hear back from John before reaching out to Bruce about his availability for a call - Bruce though now that we're on this chain, when are you available? Would 1-3 or 2-4 work? Or?
Cheryl, Victoria told me you were not able to work out how to become covered under privilege. As such, she recommended our meeting and call be only my father, the Board and John. My father wants it to be Bruce, John, me and him.
Please advise and I'll also touch base with Victoria.
Thanks.

Also Cheryl, Doug earlier this morning sent a 13pg memo about the relationship between Teneo and the Foundation, based on your, John and Terry's suggestion, to Victoria, Jennifer, John, Bruce, Terry, me - and then to Hannah and Justin for or ostensibly for Dad. If ok, I am happy to forward it to you as you were not on his visible email list.
Thanks.I wonder if we can get on call this weekend to get updated.best.cdm

I feel I should write you all an update but I’m not sure what to write. It is very much Groundhog Day around here. I wake at the same time every morning and eat the same breakfast in more or less the same seat at the same DFAC every single day of the week. The first couple days I was here they served mango yogurt and it was the best. Every morning I excitedly approach the yogurt bin to discover, again, no mango. Friday is Steak Night. Saturday lunch is Mongolian Grill. Thursday is Afghan (I seem to be the only one that actually eats it).
I suppose that I should be thankful that my experience here is routine. Excitement is likely synonymous with danger. But the days go slow.
Having said that, I’m somehow 16% of the way done. As slow as the days seem to pass, the weeks have gone by quickly. We’re down to a skeleton staff at Camp Phoenix as folks redeploy to the states or move within Afghanistan. Amazingly, I am now the senior USAF Captain in the legal office. In a matter of weeks I’ve seen three go home and as a result I’m no longer the new guy; I’m the experienced veteran.
Hope you all are well. I love and miss you!

I think I may be overdue for an update—the time goes surprisingly fast here in some ways. As a friend recently explained to me, the days go slow but the weeks go fast. I feel like I just arrived but the Excel spreadsheet I use to track my days tells me I’m already over 20% done.
Things here are very fluid--everything seems to change before you even know it. When I arrived in mid-March I was told not to get too settled because my office building would soon be closing and that I would have to relocate to a different installation. The exact date was tbd, but under no circumstance would I be here through April. And yet here I am on May 4th.
When I came to work on Wednesday morning I was informed that we were scheduled to helo out in less than 48 hours. I rushed back to my room to pack everything up so that I could ship most of my gear and travel light. When I returned to the office less than an hour later I was told that I was not moving and that I couldn’t ship anything because my destination was, once again, tbd. This “hurry up and wait” mentality to operational planning was initially frustrating, but I’ve concluded that I am content and safe where I am (knock on wood). If my bosses need to take even more time to move me so be it.
The experience does make me wonder how we are going to get mostly everyone out of here by the end of the year. My command seems to be struggling mightily to close a single building and move 70 people. DoD as a whole needs to close dozens of installations and move thousands of troops. My guess is things are fluid now but will be downright chaotic in a couple months.
Hope you are all well back home. I love and miss you lots. Gabe
Well at least the four guys who are supposed to close the building can do their job and go home. Hang in there.
The legal office is on the move! We got word late last week that Bagram had room for us so we were forced to abandon our comfortable digs and come to this overcrowded, dirty, marginally dangerous installation. At first it was going to be all of us. Then an hour later we learned that three of the four will be continuing to Qatar--and leaving me in Afghanistan. The plan may change again, however. They are leaving me in a couple days, but it may be for only a week or two before I join them in Qatar (or five months). We all came over this morning via helicopter. Since I may only be here for a couple weeks they can't get me into permanent housing yet and thus the three legal guys will share the transient "can." It is a tiny storage container with bunk beds in it. My coworkers, who will leave in a matter of days for Qatar, were kind enough to grab the bottom bunks while I humped their weapon cases into the compound. Then they showed us the legal office. There are two desks. They were kind enough to claim those as well. Odd, considering that I AM STAYING TO WORK HERE!I've concluded that this place can bring out the best or the worst in a person. My coworkers have clearly allowed this place to bring out the worst in them and that it is every man for himself. I've decided to go in the opposite direction: I'll get one chance to make a positive contribution here so I'm going to make the most of it. I'm actually glad to be here as I'm surrounded by other people and I can escape my coworkers' constant complaining.I should know more about where I'll end up in a couple days (I've been saying that since I got here). Nonetheless, I'll keep you all posted.Love and miss you!

Senator John Culver. The actual quote was you can hang by your thimbs for..., but I don't think that would have mattered to your co-worker. Not to make a pun, but hang in there.
I'm doing well. I just keep thinking back to something you once told me: I can hang off a ledge by my fingernails for five months. I think someone told you that but I remember you relaying it to me.I mentioned it to my negative coworkers as they discussed how "horrible" it will be to be stuck at Bagram for three days waiting on a flight out. One explained that no, a person can't hang off a ledge for that long and would surely die. That is what I'm dealing with. You're absolutely right--this place makes people crazy. On Tue, May 13, 2014 at 8:26 PM, John Podesta <john.podesta@gmail.com> wrote:

All is good. Trying to figure out which senior defense official I can hitch a ride with to come visit you.
Since I may only be here for a couple weeks they can't get me into permanent housing yet and thus the three legal guys will share the transient "can." Senator John Culver. The actual quote was you can hang by your thimbs for..., but I don't think that would have mattered to your co-worker. Not to make a pun, but hang in there.

Hands full may be a misnomer. I had my hand operated on on Wednesday and I'm walking around my right hand in a big bandage. I'll check into this.
Good luck this week with your adoring fans and your crazy critics. Seems really good so far.

Subject: Update
Gabe
We are adding both house and senate majority pac fundraisers later this month. You had first suggested doing it so wanted to close the loop. Will also send you a revised calender of political travel this month.
I made it back stateside very late on Thursday night. The "freedom flight" let us off in Baltimore and I spent the night with Mom and Dad before making taking the final flight back to the Pacific Northwest. As you might imagine, I am very, very glad to be home and looking forward to seeing you all soon. Thanks for all the emails and support over the last seven months. Love, Gabe
Meant to email sooner that she was seeing Pollack and Anzalone today. She seemed to like both of them and basically told them both they would be part of this initial plan. No promises.

Robby, just spoke with Joel Benenson. He's working on a memo with his thoughts that we should have in 24 hours but I told him you would be reaching out to him directly. He's aware of her meetings today and has basic sense of plan but could use a conversation with you. He's in mexico and then montana till beginning of the year fyi.

1. We seem to have a settled on a team for the research project--we just need to lock in the media people. Attached is the latest draft of the one pager. I'm hoping to get the team discussing and editing the project design over the holiday so we can present a proposal to HRC at the beginning of Jan. Fingers crossed.
2. Good discussion about digital and tech. I think we have some good digital options...she approved setting up an interview process for CTO candidates, since we want someone outside politics for this role and we need outside advice on candidates.
3. Self research: Cheryl, she wanted to keep Heather and the team going from DC. I flagged that we will likely need to expand the team to 5-10 people, which she seemed fine with. I also flagged that self research is so integral to rapid response, vetting, content, etc that we'd probably want a contingent in HQ to prevent bottlenecks. We agreed I'd loop back with you to discuss options--I think a hybrid model may work. Let's discuss.
4. We had a good discussion about communications. John there are some WH people I'd like to discuss. I'll follow up. Any names welcome!

He is firm in his position. He is honored to have been considered but cannot accept the job given his economic and business responsibilities, including prior commitment to other candidates.
He reiterated that he was enormously impressed with HRC and wishes her the best but cannot put himself through what she will have to put herself through.
He welcomes continuing to have a dialogue with Robby about ideas for people or issues.
My update is as follows:1. JOM: I had a good conversationw ith JOM on Monday. She was very gracious; honored to be considered (and very complimentary of RM); did not think there was a role that made sense for her to move her family given her role as deputy campaign manager for 2012 where she had accountability for building and operating substantial aspects of the campaign. Would be happy to be considered to be a part-time senior advisor if that made sense for the ultimate manager. She would be willing to travel back and forth and shared that in 2012, they had senior managers who had accountability for areas or projects so there was clear lines and expectations -- that is a model in which she would be able to participate best. I asker here wehre she thought, given the breadth of her experience she could best add value -- she said in two places: 1) as sounding board to manager on what and how they structured and the campaign (and is happy to do that now without compensation since much of that will happen in the next two months) and 2) as end-user consumer/evaluator and partner to ensure the tools built meet the needs of field in specific places, including what tools are really valuable and what are not and how to design to outcomes that are practical and accessible for field staff.2. DG -- exchanged emails with DG; she is on holiday until 5 January; we are connecting that Monday; I don't know that she will be looking to move from where she landed at her firm but will push; JJS advised that she is terrific though he thinks of her less operationally and more at the intersection of policy, politics and action (e.g., she believes she is excellent at policy and politics).3. Self-Research -- spoke to HRC. As we discussed, her definition of what she sees remaining with personal lawyers and HFS is the narrow areas we discussed (e.g., taxes, health, finances/speeches, family) though she added BZ. I shared that HFS can continue to manage in partnership with outside personal counsel (including DEK, HT, me) but that self-research as a whole (and explained the larger paradigm) should be in NY and run by someone sitting in NYC,with which she agreed. We discussed HFS; she wants her doing these areas, vetting, and personnel from a perch in the Legal Counsel operation or the COO operation -- RM let's discuss so it is consistent with your vision, organizational paradigm and goals.4. WC --- she executed her paperwork and will be live in DC or NYC (she wants to be wherever RM will be) effective January 12 (the week before she has to do some transition work for her team member who will be stepping in for 90 days). I agreed to secure her housing -- which is done for NYC -- but if she is to come to DC, I need to do that so let me know.I think those are all my updates.best.cdm

John,
I just learned from Senator Mazie Hirono that she was able to get me a seat at the State Dinner for Prime Minister Abe that the President is hosting at the White House on Tuesday night. Thanks for your help.
Following up on my earlier e-mail to you of April 11 (below), can you introduce me by e-mail to Dan Schwerin and Jake Sullivan? I’d like to meet them in May, before I leave on a trip to Europe and Asia in June. Thanks.

Subject: Question re fundraising for HRC
John,
It was great to see you last Monday, and I’m pleased to learn that HRC is finally making her announcement this weekend.
Following up on our discussion, I would appreciate your introducing me (by e-mail) to Dan Schwerin and Jake Sullivan, and to putting in a good word for me with Dennis Cheng.
Also, I would appreciate your asking Neera if she can get me a desk, PC, and phone at CAP (a shared office is fine), since I now have no place to go when I’m there.
I have a question for you. In early June, I will be arranging for Neera to make her first visit Japan to meet with Japanese political, government, and business leaders. It will be a good opportunity for her to learn about U.S.-Japan relations and to get acquainted with Japanese leaders and their issues.
I’m planning to host a small dinner for Neera in Tokyo on June 9 inviting several high net worth American business executives who can potentially contribute to HRC’s campaign. Could you please tell me:
1. What are the various categories and levels of contributions these individuals can make to the HRC campaign?
2. How do I ensure that I am given “credit” for having gotten these individuals to contribute to HRC’s campaign?
3. Is there a manual or set of guidelines you can send me on the do’s and don’ts of being a bundler for HRC?
Thanks very much, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Glen

Madame Secretary, Quick update for you: (1) Brian's video is great and it's being emailed tomorrow to launch the Briefing Room website. (2) We met again today to brainstorm the speech outline with Dan and he is going to have a draft outline for the team by COB tonight. We will reconvene again tomorrow to give him feedback and our goal is to get a revised outline to you tomorrow COB. We will then do a call with you to discuss it and Dan will then create and initial draft with Lissa and Joel. Kristina will also send an overview memo with our goals, objectives and plan for the launch overall. Let me know if you have any questions! Robby
Dear John,
Just wanted to debrief you on my meeting with Amanda. We had an excellent conversation last Friday in Brooklyn, and she was very appreciative of my broad experience and achievements--however she is not yet clear on how best to use those skills at the moment. She said that her team is developing as of now:
--She just hired a staffer for Hispanic media;
--She has someone doing Hispanic digital;
-- one person will be doing policy (mainly immigration);
--she is looking for a Millennial Latino;
The latter is—in my opinion—quite important since the Latino community is undergoing a massive transformation. With a new generation organizing beyond and besides the traditional Hispanic organizations and with much broader political interests such as environmental and climate issues that are not part of the classic Latino policy portfolio. There are also the new entrepreneurs that are featured in HRC's launch video as well as the Dreamers pushing the boundaries of established Hispanic politics. These people don’t want to get stuck in an ethnic niche but are conscious of their heritage. This is an arena where the mix of my experiences might be very helpful.
Given this dynamic and after my conversation with Amanda I think I could help with the following:
--Identifying and building the relations with new organizations attracting the younger generation, like the Latino Victory Foundation, reach out to Latino entrepreneurs and their organizations, work with Aspen's newly launched Latino and Society's program (Monica Lozano) as well as the traditional organizations like NCLR and NALEO.
-- Targeted messaging towards these groups. Taking advantage of my experience working on small business finance and promotion, the environment, climate change and sustainable growth, as well as projects in Latin America that can serve as inspiration to an emerging generation of Hispanics in the U.S. Lastly, connecting international affairs—specifically experiences of middle class economic growth and sustainability in Latin America with existing community interests in the U.S.
--Spanish language media surrogate on all those issues. This seems to be a field that could be built out in the campaign.
Amanda suggested I meet with Jose Villarreal, so I have contacted him to meet in person or speak on the phone as soon as possible. He knows me from my time at Boell when I cooperated with NCLR discussing immigration policies in the U.S. and Europe and with efforts promoting discussions on international affairs among the Latino community. Will keep you posted on how that conversation goes.
After my visit in Brooklyn I am more convinced (and excited) than ever and ready to do anything needed to join the campaign.
H

Hi - wanted to update your on a conversation I had with Marlon yesterday - we were talking about March states and he raised an issue from Nov of my missing two flights. I told him that yes, I missed one flight but paid $900 out of my pocket to get another flight and did not miss any events, one interview was re-sked but it was taped so did not miss a live hit. The second Delta airlines admitted fault because the gate agent closed the door 15 min early, they put me on another flight at no cost and I did not miss any events.
I am not sure why Marlon raised this now as an issue with me but I wanted to flag it for you since when you asked if I had received any feedback or criticism I had said no because I hadn't hear anything until this yesterday.
Also, I reached out to John; we are supposed to talk this week.

What is so cynical about this bill is that roughly 80% of food labels already have a toll free number or a URL. So this is a smoke screen that changes nothing and hands a complete victory to big food and chemical companies over the rights of average citizens.
What is even worse, as Debbie Stabenow says below, is that the Republicans have zero tolerance for any compromise and certainly anything mandatory, so Debbie is now not even bothering to propose a compromise.
I already told you last night what is going to happen next. If this bill passes, Bernie will have a field day. HRC should absolutely get ahead of this and declare her absolute opposition to this bill before it gets voted upon on Wednesday. Hopefully that will give the Dem senators some second thoughts but at least that would stop Bernie from taking center stage in defense of consumers, 90% of whom have already polled in favor of an on-package disclosure.
HRC's failure to take this pre-emptive initiative and strongly condemn this will be a terrible miss.
