Hi everyone --
Attached is a draft of inserts for tomorrow's rally in Phoenix. She won't have a podium so I've written up a few bullets she can digest ahead of time on 3 key topics: K-12, guns and immigration. Each have an Arizona focus.
I have Bernie contrast in guns, and Trump/Arpaio contrast in immigration... and I've included Bernie contrast in immigration, too, though I'm not sure we're doing that.
Let me know what you think. Thanks!
Good call.

And
this is especially important for Hispanic or Latino kids in Arizona. Here in Arizona, 1 out of every 3 Hispanic
kids is below the poverty line. That’s more
than DOUBLE the rate for non-Hispanic whites[O1] . And a high quality education is a big part
of what can even some of those odds.
Arizona passed the
strictest anti-immigration law in the country back in 2010 – the so-called
“show me your papers” law, which opened the door to racial profiling of Latinos.
Now Republicans in your legislature are
proposing bills that would crack down even further. I don’t
think the hundreds of thousands of people in Arizona who live in fear every day
should be pushed even further into the shadows

So the edits are:In the immigration riff, we could add a stat about the very high rate of Hispanic child poverty in Arizona. Many who write about education in the state emphasize the disproportionately high poverty rate. In the Arizona immigration riff, I suggest tweaking the language. I don't want to name-check the proposed legislation in the AZ Senate to increase criminal penalties for undocumented kids. Yes, it would increase criminal penalties -- but for relatively serious felons. I don't think we want to be in a place of explaining why we necessarily think it's so bad.Hi guys. Two suggested edits/additions attached (in track changes).

Every child, not matter what zip code they live in, deserves a good education. When we invest in our children’s education, we’re investing in our country’s future and in creating a stronger economy for all of us. We must invest in our schools so every child has the opportunity to obtain a quality education. That means getting quality teachers in every classroom, repairing and modernizing crumbling schools, and preparing our kids for the jobs of tomorrow.

Subject: DRAFT: inserts for tomorrow's AZ rally (K-12, guns and immigration)
Hi everyone --
Attached is a draft of inserts for tomorrow's rally in Phoenix. She won't have a podium so I've written up a few bullets she can digest ahead of time on 3 key topics: K-12, guns and immigration. Each have an Arizona focus.
I have Bernie contrast in guns, and Trump/Arpaio contrast in immigration... and I've included Bernie contrast in immigration, too, though I'm not sure we're doing that.
Let me know what you think. Thanks!

I think we should emphasize Rs in the legislature trying to crack down again -- they've proposed three anti-imm bills in the past 3 months. Two of them weren't voted out of Senate and the third is the criminal penalties for felons law. I think rather than name-check any, our strongest point is to refer to all three in the aggregate, as it demonstrates the return of the anti-immigrant movement in the state (which commentators say has been re-awakened perhaps due to Trump).
+ Lorella, who pointed out that this should actually be that AZ Republicans want to deny healthcare to kids of undocumented parents. i.e., the kids are not undocumented. So let's go with that sentence, yeah?On Sun, Mar 20, 2016 at 10:46 PM, Megan Rooney <mrooney@hillaryclinton.com> wrote:Yeah I caught that, thanks. On Sun, Mar 20, 2016 at 10:46 PM, Megan Rooney <mrooney@hillaryclinton.com> wrote:On Sun, Mar 20, 2016 at 10:44 PM, Maya Harris <mharris@hillaryclinton.com> wrote:Megan - Bumping this. I think we should take out that point altogether, as my edits to that paragraph reflect. It just invites our own vulnerability.

I think in AZ, specifics help. The immigrant and Latino community are much more plugged into what's happening here than in other states. Making the general point and citing this as a specific example of how anti-immigrant these proposals are is key for this community here. The sentencing bill is extreme, but the reaction to kids is stronger. This is an attack on U.S. born kids because of their parents' legal status. More along the same vein as birthright citizenship attacks.

Thanks!

OK, so here is the bullet with Sara's revisions. The question is whether we keep the sentence in brackets. Lorella votes yes. I personally think specificity is better -- I don't really know what we're talking about here otherwise. It feels too vague without SOMETHING concrete.Arizona passed the strictest anti-immigration law in the country back in 2010 – the so-called “show me your papers” law, which opened the door to racial profiling of Latinos. Now Republicans in the Arizona state legislature are proposing bills that would crack down even harder on undocumented immigrants. [They even want to deny healthcare to kids with undocumented parents -- even if those kids aren't undocumented themselves.] I don’t think the hundreds of thousands of people in Arizona who live in fear every day should be pushed even further into the shadows. On Sun, Mar 20, 2016 at 11:20 PM, Amanda Renteria <arenteria@hillaryclinton.com> wrote:I am good w getting the general argument down right now.Sent from my iPhoneI think in AZ, specifics help.

It just invites our own vulnerability.
On Sun, Mar 20, 2016 at 10:48 PM, Megan Rooney <mrooney@hillaryclinton.com> wrote:+ Lorella, who pointed out that this should actually be that AZ Republicans want to deny healthcare to kids of undocumented parents. i.e., the kids are not undocumented. When he talks about the people he wants to help now, many of them would have been out of the shadows and on a path to citizenship YEARS ago.
