Dear Jeffrey,

So funny you should mention Goethe!

I was filming a few weeks ago with Ned Friedman, the director of the Arnold Arboretum, for my new course for teachers, the Poetry of Earth, Sea and Sky, and he recited part of this poem to me while we were looking at and filming some trees. He and I discussed how poetry and science in the 18th and 19th centuries were entirely complementary pursuits--people botanized and then wrote poems on their specimens. and they held poets accountable to knowing of what they wrote. And yes, young women, with more leisure time, were especially enlisted by naturalists in the 19th century to go out and make discoveries. Emily Dickinson was one such naturalist poet. .

Have you seen my television series? With which you helped me so much (as well as helping with the above!) it is streaming on gparyinamtheasm

OR you can watch the old fashioned way on PBS World Channel tonight at 7:30 or tomorrow on WNET 13 at 12:30

184 stations around the country ended up airing Season 1 of the series, and we are now proceeding to plan, and fimdraise for, seasons 2-3. I'm hoping that things settle down enough to use the Woody episode. I thought Moses's letter was very persuasive myself, but the world in not subtle.

Goethe embodied his belief that science and poetry, with their corresponding conceptions of nature, are not incompatible but actu-ally complementary. Th e poet-scientist, however, has often struggled for a hearing in the modern Western world. Goethe was bewildered by many of the responses his essay engendered among his circle of friends and acquaintances. What was this new eff ort supposed to be?

Introduction

It seemed too scientifi c for poetry, but perhaps also too poetic for sci-ence. "Nowhere," he complained, "would anyone grant that science and poetry can be united. People forgot that science had developed from poetry and they failed to take into consideration that a swing of the pendulum might benefi cently reunite the two, at a higher level and to mutual advantage." 14 Years later Goethe composed a poem also titled 'Th e Metamorphosis of Plants" (which follows this Introduc-tion) in an effort to make his scientifi c theories and pursuits more palatable and intelligible to his wife and women friends, though with only limited success
