The brain of the Chiari patient showed significantly more movement in two locations compared to the healthy control.
"Better visualisation and understanding of the biomechanical properties of the brain could lead to earlier detection and monitoring of brain disorders," says one of the team, mechanical engineer Mehmet Kurt of Stevens Institute of Technology.
The researchers plan to use phase-based aMRI in clinical settings on patients with a wide range of conditions and structural brain abnormalities, to observe the different ways the brain moves in those cases.
The research has been published in the journal Magnetic Resonance in Medicine .

i suggest with different blood flows to each side dependent on right or left down , try it. . diffremt thoughs , and most fmri has been done ONLY face up

Well watching blood flow as I do every day maybe it does - when we look at preop perfusion imaging you can definitely see regional differences in median transit tones depending on the vessel
But the important structures that keep things going are all midline structures with bilateral perfusion so for good reason
You may see lateralizaton and more blood flow to bigger structures but not sure they matter in a resting state.
Did a super cool case very very rare the other day
You have these nuclei in your brain stem called the inferior colliculi - they are responsible for muting all of your internal sounds so you don't go crazy. Imagine hearing yourself chew and swallow and the air passing down your nasopharynx etc etc.
Usually if you infarct the blood supply to this area you infarct your brain stem and die. It's nearly impossible to selectively lesion this/these nuclei however if one of the tiny vessels has an aneurysm nearby and we have to sacrifice it ....
So it's a careful Discussion with the patients because even though we save their lives potentially it might drive them crazy to hear everything all the time if we unmute their internal mute. Super super super rare. But
