Shaikha medical report
Our daughter Shaikha was born with normal milestones and development and progressed in all areas of development even exceeding in knowledge and verbal skills during her toddler stage. Everything went well until just over the 2.5 year mark, closer to three when she became less verbal, having quieter days. She was still social, cognitive and played appropriately with toys but didn't use her language as spontaneously as before and only answered questions when she felt like it. At times would give wrong answers purposely and laugh saying she was playing games. Eye contact was good and she loved people and had no stimulatory behaviors but just was defiant and oppositional so it led us to get her assessed.
We enrolled her at a UCLA therapy center in July 2008 at age three. It took their team 5 Weeks to assess her (5 days a week, 6 hours a day) to determine that she had Autism. Their system and approach was very ABA directed which in hindsight made our daughter even more non compliant and oppositional. Unfortunately it was a closed classroom setting with children who were non verbal with odd behaviors who tantrumed frequently.Our daughter was calm in nature and never had rigidity about routines or rituals.
Our daughters issues at the time were being oppositional and a mild language delay but all other areas were fine. Whilst there, we were only able to watch her one hour each day at a time selected by the team through a

double sided mirror so we are not sure what happened but within those five weeks whilst they determined if she was autistic their techniques changed her.
We were in shock when she came home for the weekend with complete nonsense way of communication, just parroting everything we said without thinking. It horrified us that our wonderful thinking child who could reason with us and had good enough communication skills was suddenly just copying our sounds and sentences no matter how ridiculous or silly the sentence.
Naturally we were shocked and complained. The team informed us that this was echolalia which they taught her to gain compliance so that she would copy everything they did or said. Needless to say she was unhappy there but we stayed 7 more weeks because our daughter was behaving so differently from how she was before the programme and we knew only they could bring her back to her norm, which they did.
She left the programme seemingly doing as well as when we arrived but the experience changed her. We noticed that whenever she was stressed about something or becoming sick she would start repetitively placing toys in and out of boxes like tidying up rather than play appropriately. This repetitive nature of play and learning was frequently used on Shaikha if she did not comply with a task. The therapists would make her repeat a task until it was completed exactly the way they desired.
They convinced us that the only solution was ABA and introduced their team to work with us in Dubai. At the time we knew very little about the rigid techniques that were used in the programme so we gave it a try for give months before realizing how controlling it was and that our daughter was miserable.
In last three years, Shaikha progressively got worse with each bout of illness, food intolerances, stomach bug, anemia, fevers and she would lose more and more skills. She also had weight loss despite eating great portions of nutritious foods, no growth and deteriorated both mentally and physically.
At 4 1/2 years of age, after numerous fevers, rapid weight loss and loss of all communication we did medical investigations in Uk but all they could determine was eosinophilia esophagitis through biopsy and multiple allergic reactions to many food groups. We gave the recommended oral steroids and started using natural supplements like curcumin, slippery elm etc to heal the damage and strong probiotics. She improved somewhat but abilities never really returned and she continued getting high fevers.
Due to this we realized more medical investigation was necessary so in October 2010 we had blood, urine and stool samples taken again with a leading laboratory in USA.
The laboratories discovered she had hookworms called Necator Americans. We had traveled to twelve Latin American countries when she was two years old.

The de-worming medicine was given twice in November 2010 (age 5 1/2)and it resolved the underlying issue but our daughter was anemic, had high level of fungus, low amino acids, essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, basically everything was either low or non detectable so we began the process of biomedical treatment to regain all lost nutrients and remove fungus. She was also put on IVIG which she gets every 8 weeks as we have been told she has brain Inflammation from strep infection (PANDAS)which impairs her abilities and causes repetitive finger movements and other forms of motor tics when unwell.
Our daughter had just turned 11 this and despite all these good interventions, she progresses slowly, still has not recovered her lost language skills and when unwell has OCD, impulsivity, great difficulty concentrating and vocal / motor tics. She has repetitive finger movements and sensory system heightens etc visual stimulatory behaviors. She had no unusual behaviors or repetitive play before aged 4.
