Egypt poll highlights continuing support for peaceful relations with Israel
- 60% of Egyptians believe 1978 accords should be `upheld' However more than 1 in 4 [27%] feel both the treaty and diplomatic relations with Israel should end Moussa remains front runner
Dubai 19th April 2011 - These are the findings from YouGov Siraj's latest Egypt poll, conducted between 7th April and 13th April, of 1003 Egyptian residents.
60% of Egyptians believe Egypt should 'Uphold the [1978] peace treaty, and maintain diplomatic relations with Israel' while just over one in four [27%) feel both the treaty and diplomatic relations with Israel should end. With regards to relations with the West. a third of respondents (32%) approve of President Obama while more than half [59%) disapprove (compared to 70% of respondents that disapprove of Hilary Clinton, Secretary of State for the United States).
One change since YouGov Siraj's mid-February survey, conducted immediately after Mubarak's departure, is that many more people are unsure who they would like to lead Egypt. In February, 49% backed Amr Mousse, the secretary-general of the Arab League. Ahmed Zeweil, the Egyptian-American Nobel Prize-winning chemist, came second, with 13%, and Omar Sulemain, briefly Mubarak's vice-president third on 9%. Peter Kellner, YouGov plc President, commented 'Amr Moussa must still be favourite: but there is now plainly room for one of the others, or a completely new figure. to build momentum and emerge as victor'. The poll shows Egyptians expect the elections to be conducted properly with 86% 'very' or 'fairly' confident they will be free and fair.
