Wow today I heard the most fascinating story about the origin of kibera which is Nairobi's largest slum. I am here in Nairobi.

The land was a grant to the nubians (Sudanese) for fighting for his majesty in WW1. So it is theirs. They have been absentee landlords since then, renting and re-renting the land along tribal lines and using funds to fuel Sudanese conflict.

The warlord I was talking to was telling me that the idiots who keep trying to upgrade the slum will always fail BC it is a huge cash cow for a major network plus the place where politics and power grow together.

Kibera is also the home district of the prime minister FYI.
