Hi,

Ty had a little bit of LA work that he wanted help with today (summarizing and taking anecdotal notes). It was challenging for him. The material was difficult to read and comprehend. After we discussed it, he could reason what it was saying, but not without me explaining it. Just thought you should know... that was not done completely independently...

Also, Ty tried to give me an envelope today, but I owed you one, so I told him to hold onto it!

Thanks! See you next week!

Laura

Hi Laura. Thank you for this. I will speak with ty on it. Do you know if the material was something he chose or was given to the whole class? Just curious really. It sounds like it may be above his reading level? Or should his reading/ comprehension level be here and he is not grasping it?

And ok on the envelope. I guess I was figuring the make up of the make up session was next Tuesday! All

good. See you next Tuesday! Lesley

HI,

I doubt Ty would have chosen the material (not his cup of tea...). It was definitely above his reading level, but I cannot speak to what he "should" be able to read at this point in seventh grade. I thought it was well above. I know I would not have been able to make sense of it without discussion with a parent or teacher if I was in seventh grade... It was an online assignment. Basically, it attempted to explain, through very challenging material, that because an author had chosen to write through journal form, what she could share was limited, as it would be written through first person, as a diary, and only speak to what would be important to a young girl at that time... The next section discussed that if you want to get an accurate account of history through fiction, you are better off reading historical fiction, as opposed to contemporary literature from the time period, as it is difficult for authors to completely mask their own emotions about what is going on at the time. It was challenging. Ty "got" the concept after discussion, but could not make sense of it on his own - he was also, to be completely honest, very interested in how his bracket was coming along as well! 0 Understandable... I don't think my husband can hold a conversation about anything other than basketball right now either! Oh, I apologize if I messed you up!...I just knew I owed you a session!! Sony! Have a great weekend! See you next week!

you did not mess me up with the envelope! I have in the drawer ready to hand to you on Tuesday! :)

OK, the bracket thing totally made me laugh...it is completely on everyones brains who has any interest in basketball! I heard Ty asking `Alexa' the minute he got up at 6:20am "who won the Michigan game"!

Ok on the reading...sounds very challenging indeed!...I may have needed your help in deciphering it! I'm glad you were there to help him and that he did `get it' in the end. Comprehension is for sure something Ty needs to work on. I don't get why Ms Tomasio would give such a hard reading assignment...or maybe some kids are able to decipher it.? I agree on a challenge, but not a complete loss...and it sounds like Ty was completely lost...OK, well, I'm glad we have YOU...I will get on Newsela with Ty this weekend...I just found an article on brackets... I'll have him read that! ("Math can help better the odds of plotting a perfect NCAA bracket"...I'll bet he can find it interesting)!

Have a great basketball weekend. Lesley
