RE: NOMINATION DATE EXTENDED - Innocence Lost: Investigation (07-152) and Prosecution of Sex Trafficking of Children Seminar, January 23-26, 2007
Hi Jim -- I haven't heard back from you regarding Ms. so I think I will need to bring her to the grand jury. I would like to do this the afternoon of Friday, October 20th. Please let me know if I can fax over a subpoena or if you would like the agents to hand deliver it.
Thanks.
Hi Jim -- Thank you for the e-mail, and I will even forgive the football reference. I was just set for trial, so the earliest I will be able to reschedule the testimony will be after Thanksgiving. I will give you a call to discuss the immunity issue but I am concerned about other things we have talked about -- if Ms. Miller is given immunity, will she be forthcoming and answer the questions? Or am I going to jump through hoops to get her immunity and then have to worry about filing motions to compel, motions for orders to show cause why she shouldn't be held in contempt, etc., etc.?
As always, thank you for your assistance.
Regards,
Marie

Hi Guy -- It was very nice to hear from you. I am starting trial next week, so I will be difficult to catch for the next three weeks or so. Regarding Mr. Epstein, there isn't much to tell. The investigation is continuing. As I told Mr. Lefcourt, Mr. Epstein is a target of the investigation. If anything more develops, I will let you know.
Can you confirm whether you are the "lead" attorney for Mr. Epstein? In other words, should I contact you first or Mr. Lefcourt?
Thank you.

Not surprisingly, the guy won't take no for an answer. Are you free any time before 11:30 to do a conference call? My supervisor, Karen, isn't available, and we already have some "leakage problems here, so I would prefer to do the call with you.
Thanks.

Hi Judge Martinez -- Since my child molester finally decided to plead guilty, I am going to head down to Miami on Wednesday the 15th to catch up with everyone. Are you free for lunch? I also have been trying to schedule lunch with Judge Ungaro for a long time and I was hoping maybe all three of us are up for a fun relaxing lunch.
Please give my best to Dianne, too.

Hi Cyndee -- We haven't made travel plans yet. With respect to the hotel, Shawn was told that we need to have all of the names ofour "group" before they will designate a hotel. I am waiting to hear back from the local law enforcement invitees.
It sounds like I have to be there on the evening of December 3rd and everyone has to stay through noon on December 6th.
I have asked Shawn to coordinate everything, and I will press the locals to give us a decision right away.

Hi Alex --
I wanted to let you know that Terri Patterson recommended two individuals to invite to the Conference, Sergeant Erik Palmer from the Miami-Dade Police Department and Detective Richard Love from the Special Investigations Unit at the Ft Lauderdale Police Department. Erik is on board and is very happy to attend. I have not heard back from Detective Love yet. From Palm Beach County, Captain Carol Gregg of the Special Investigations Unit at PBSO is going to attend.
I am feeling very guilty about not inviting anyone from the northern counties, but we must get special permission to extend our group. So, if Detective Love cannot attend, would you like me to invite someone else from Broward or someone from up north? And/or would you like me to apply for permission to include someone from one of the northern counties?
On another note, we had talked about doing a PSC road show to meet with state and local law enforcement agencies. How does your schedule look for November 28th through the 30th? And do you have any particular topics you want to discuss or people whom you want to see?
Thank you.

Alex and Jeff -- I just received word from the conference that they are overbooked but may be able to accommodate a fourth local law enforcement officer. They will confirm with me tomorrow whether they have space. Even if they do have space, however, the Conference will not pay for the extra guest, the Office will have to pick up the tab for travel, hotel, etc.
Before I extend the invitation to our northern brethren, I thought I should ask whether the Office has the funds available to cover those expenses.
Please let me know.
Thank you.

Hi Karen -- I have registered again and I received my confirmation notice. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I'm not sure why the info didn't "take" the first time.
I have received a number of calls from the law enforcement officers regarding the "dress code" for the conference. I didn't see any information about that on the website, and I was wondering what I should tell them.
And, any news yet on my request for a spot to bring a fourth law enforcement officer?
Thank you!

Iii Laz -- Thank you for your message. The other three agents are being paid for by Main Justice. We have to get the fourth agent signed up by today's deadline, so as soon as I know that the Conference will have space for him/her, I will put together the memo and send it down to Jeff.
Thanks.

Hi Bob, Corey, and Diana -- There is going to be a national Project Safe Childhood Conference in Washington, DC, during the week of December 3rd. We have received tentative approval to pay the expenses of a local/state law enforcement officer to attend, and I was hoping that you could recommend someone that you work with regularly to attend. A number of courses are being offered on topics like forensics, the spread of child pornography, and the psychology of the child predator, so it should be pretty interesting and it would be a nice "thank you" for someone who has worked hard in this area.
We are at the top of the waiting list for a spot, so they are going to tell me today if we get the spot and I have to tell them today who is going to fill the spot, so if you could get back to me this morning, it would be most appreciated.
I will need to provide contact info and an e-mail address for whomever is going to attend. I am happy to call to extend the invite, or if you would rather call directly, the conference starts the morning of December 4th and ends at noon on December 6th, so travel will be the afternoon of December 3rd returning the afternoon of December 6th. The only expenses that the officer/agent will have to cover are some meals.
Thank you!

Hi all -- I just received an e-mail from EOUSA letting tne know that the conference is overbooked and they will not be able to accommodate another law enforcement officer.
From our dealings with the event organizers, it appears that they underestimated the popularity of the event and they have run out of hotel rooms, conference rooms, and exhibition space.
Alex and I are planning a trip up to Fort Pierce after we return, and hopefully, at that time, we can meet all of the law enforcement officers that work with the Office.

Hi Dave — I got approval to bring a state/local LEO from the northern counties, but I don't know who to ask. I have sent an e-mail to the AUSAs up there but haven't heard back. Could you ask your ICE colleague up in Fort Pierce who he would recommend that I invite and ask for that person's contact info?

Well, speaking of defense continuances, since I am now a member of the Florida Bar, I have to take a series of "Basic" CLE courses. One of them is Basic Criminal Law, which includes basic federal procedure, client relations, and ethics, starring the following illustrious faculty -- David Marcus, Bill Barzee, Joaquin Mendes, and Brian Tannebaum. I decided that I just could not go.
