IN THE NEWS

Epstein Email Says Trump 'Knew About the Girls' as White House Calls its Release a Democratic Smear The Wall Street Journal (11/12, Safdar, Palazzolo) reported that Democrats released new Jeffrey Epstein emails referencing Donald Trump, prompting Republicans to accuse them of cherry-picking and to publish more than 20,000 additional Epstein documents in response. The initial emails included a 2011exchange in which Epstein suggested Trump was a "dog that hasn't barked" and referenced who had repeatedly said Trump never behaved inappropriately toward her. According to the article, the release occurred after the FBI and the Justice Department announced in July that they would not release additional Epstein files because investigators found no evidence that would lead to an investigation of uncharged third parties and no documents warranting further public disclosure. Additional emails showed Epstein criticizing Trump in exchanges with Michael Wolff, Larry Summers, Steve Bannon, and others, including a 2019 message in which Epstein wrote that Trump "knew about the girls as he asked ghislaine to stop?' Maxwell also told Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche in an interview that she "never witnessed the president in any inappropriate setting." The article noted that while Epstein's messages speculated about Trump's awareness, boend Maxwell repeatedly stated that Trump was not involved in Epstein's crimes and behaved appropriately in their interactions. Reuters (11/12, Erickson) added that the US House secured its 218th signature on a discharge petition to force a vote on releasing Epstein's files. The petition aims to direct the DOJ to release files related to the deceased convicted sex offender. The petition has enough signatures to move forward, despite opposition from the White House. Additional reporting on the story was provided by ABC News (11/12, Hill, Peller, et al.), Al Jazeera (11/12, Harb), Associated Press (11/12, Sisak, Tucker), Axios (11/12, Lotz, Solender), BBC (11/12, Yousif), CBS News (11/12, Quinn, Hubbard), CNBC (11/12, Mangan), CNN (11/12, Collins), Deadline (11/12, Johnson), Fox News (11/12, Ruiz, Rumpf-Whitten, et al.)
