In brief, our action concerns a letter which Mr Staley approved which said that (I) he did not have a close relationship with Mr Epstein and that (2) he was last in contact with Mr Epstein well before he joined Barclays. Our case is that both those statements were untrue and that Mr Staley acted with a reckless lack of integrity in approving the letter because he appreciated the risk that the letter would be misleading.
If you have evidence that is relevant to our case — that is, relevant to the questions whether the two statements were true, and whether Mr Staley was reckless in approving the letter — then we would be grateful if you could provide it as soon as possible. If you do not have evidence yourself, but know of others who can give evidence that is relevant, then we would also be grateful if you could encourage those people to provide that evidence.
You raised concerns about the conduct of different companies and individuals. We are a regulator of financial services in the UK and our remit therefore relates to the conduct of businesses and individuals in the regulated financial sector in the UK. If you have information or evidence about matters that you think we ought to be aware of as a financial regulator, we would be grateful for it. Matters relating to persons outside the financial sector in the UK are not in our remit and accordingly would be better raised with other authorities.
