As requested, an update on our progress with dust control measures.

 

We have sprayed a test area on island with Soiltac, which is a vinyl co-polymer emulsion.  It was placed on the road down into the Maintenance/RO area.  This mix was as recommended by the manufacturer as one to withstand higher vehicle traffic for a longer period of time.  We are monitoring the area on a daily basis to ascertain how well it holds up to traffic, what it looks like, does it do the job of controlling dust, and how well it otherwise performs.  From what was left in the drum, my guess is the previously applied mix was substantially watered down to provide short term control. 

 

On Monday we will have a pallet of flake calcium chloride (40 ea. 50# bags).  We will lay a portion of that down in the same general vicinity as the Soiltac and monitor its performance.  Coverage is approximately 9 sft per pound as applied per the manufacturers recommendations.  The remaining CaCl will allow us to experiment with how much we actually need to apply to adequately control the dust for an extended period of time.  I believe this is the compound that Mr. Epstein was referring to as being used in the Texas train yards.

 

I have also been waiting for another price from a Canadian firm for Magnesium Chloride.  Should the calcium chloride not be satisfactory, this is a fall back position to be considered.  I am told MgCl is as effective as CaCl, but at twice the price.  Probably not a viable option...

 

We have also submitted a proposal through channels last Monday to pave the utility road from the maintenance area to the triangle at the helipad.  This road will probably receive the highest usage during the course of construction.The proposal is for a reclaimed asphalt mix from the St. Thomas airport.  It is semi-pervious and for $2.65 a sft at 4" thick, appears to be a bargain.  It will not only control dust, but stabilize a steep incline as well.  It can be easily patched if damaged during construction.
