The best quality wood windows that meet Florida Hurricane Standards are made by Zelluck, Tishler and Reilly. These guys are not inexpensive but will build with Honduras Mahogany which is the most resistant to decay. There are dozens of others that say they meet the FL Hurricane Standards, but many of the windows have not actually been tested. I am not aware of any Brazilian windows that are tested. There is web site www.floridabuilding.org where you can find out if a manufacturer has tested and received product approval.

For aluminum windows, CGI is the best known manufacturer. They make a good quality window but it tends to look commercial.

Aluminum windows will probably be cheaper to install initially, but the finish only lasts 10 years +/-. They will be very difficult if not impossible to re-finish.

Wood windows will need a little more maintenance on the finish…a new coat of finish every couple of years. The benefit of the wood is that they can be refinished easily and will always look nearly new with a fresh coat of Sikkens or paint.

Make sure the architect details the building so the windows can be replaced without completely tearing off the cladding on the exterior of the building or the finishes on the interior. I have seen many jobs detailed where the windows were completely trapped. Realistically, a window will have to be replaced at some point in time.

If you want a window with the least amount of maintenance that will last forever, consider solid bronze. Historical Arts and Castings did a project in Palm Beach a while back…Big $$ but absolutely beautiful. There are a couple Italian manufacturers of contemporary bronze windows, not sure if they are hurricane rated.

Who can supply the best quality, easy to slide with a sealing mechanism where door to open lifts and then slides. Client has seen or heard of a Brazilian manufactured door with these features.

What do you think about the sliding mechanical doors with pneumatic seals we installed on Limitless?

He believes Plaza is in trouble over leak failures to their product.

I had contacted CGI, spoke to their Vice President Steve Dawson who related that their 4' X 10' & 5' X 10' sliding glass doors

had been Dade tested,

were going to be approved and

were something special

"see written reply to me below".

Fred thinks they are a quality manufacturer.

If you wish to see, test these doors

either let me know and I will make arrangements or you can contact Steve directly.

county protocols and generally have the highest design pressures in the
industry. Our new SGD was recently reviewed and passed by Dade County
(we met with them and they gave us the green light). We expect to get
our "Notice of proposed acceptance" this week, which essentially is a 20
day notice you receive prior to approval. So, to summarize, we expect
formal approval in mid June but we know everything is good to go.

We have manufactured and sold these doors already. They are installed on
many job sites and we are getting rave reviews. Our glazing contractors
say its taking about 1/2 the time to install due to using 1/2 of the
fasteners and also our design uses less miscellaneous parts.
