Question 1 for Jeffrey:

Nathan Wolfe and I are meeting on Monday morning. We
have charted out some
next steps to identify areas of research opportunity
in bringing expertise
from computer security to bear on problems of
tracking and controlling
bio-bugs. *Is it appropriate for me to focus on a
goal of haivng Nathan and
I develop a research proposal for the COUQ
Foundation to fund a post-doc or
two for Nathan at UCLA?

*I think that's a good target, but wish to check
with you. If the post-doc
project works out well, it could blossom further,
attract other funding from
your or another foundation etc.

Question 2
This second question is relevant after Nathan,
computer guys and I develop
more focus.
Larry Brilliant, the head of the Google Foundation,
wants to focus on
tracking new viruses; he's been told of Nathan's
work by Nathan's present
and future deans. Brilliant is not a nice guy,
though a great public
speaker. The Google Foundation has said it is
willing to bring Google, Inc.
resources -- including expertise in some security
issues -- to bear on its
supported projects (Larry and Sergey also do this
for the start-ups they
personally invest in). Unless you have an objection,
I will look to seize
opportunities for introducing Nathan to Brilliant.
*Do you? *[I ask simply
because Brilliant has some reputation for
antagonizing some folks.]

Nathan's very excited! Me, too!

Regards,
David
