Extinction can be a natural process. When the environment changes, as when the Ice Age came 100,000 years ago, animals find themselves no longer adapted to the environment. Their habitat has changed, even disappeared, but their needs have not. So they die. Life on Earth is a history of extinctions, for about 98% of the living things that so far have lived on Earth are gone now. Dinosaurs and pterodactyls, woolly mammoths and saber-toothed cats — they are all gone.
Luckily, fossils preserve information about many extinct living things. We find bones, footprints, eggs, skin impressions, and more, and are able to see the changes in life on Earth over time
