Dearest Jeffrey,
Please, I would very much appreciate ANY opinion on the two job choices I'm down to. YOU KNOW ME and you understand the nature of both company types, so you could make a good judgement call.
I will wrap up my recruitment process this week and chose one of the following:
Islamic Financial Company
- pre-startup investment firm backed by wealthy UAE local, Al Ghaith.
- $300 paid in capital, $1 billion committed capital.
- Huge, interesting deal flow b/c of Ghaith's contacts and status. He owns steel, real estate etc.
- I would be involved in all aspects of a deal- modeling, negotiating, investing, divesting - exactly what I wanted
- 2 Ivy League boys heading it up. Looking to hire 12 "pedigree" professionals this yr
- Offering Base salary + bonus + small carry
Strategic Communications Group
- Part of big umbrella company w/ entities worldwide under different names and w/ "consultants" on need-to-basis (apparently highest level of politicians, noble prize winners - you know the drill)
- Very undercover
- Very well-connected
- "Image" consulting for countries, assisting to police co's in emerging economies trying to privatize etc
- I would do research, take notes in meetings w/ highest level of politicians, do analysis of M&A, IPO's, privatization
- I would fly privat, stay in presidential palaces (5 star hotels are frowned upon), meet the highest level of politicians, could go to any seminars at Harvard etc (all this sounds familiar...?)
- Waiting to get compensation package from them + tells me this will give me a shortcut to any job later on b/c of experience and connections I will gain
- Not sure this is my path, I was looking forward to being normal
I've been urged to end my recruitment process this week. Apparently everybody at the Dubai International Financial Center knows me, and I'm not sure that was meant in a good way...
I've interviewed w/ 20+ firms and networked more than an Arab.
Always,
