I’ve never been much of a slippery slope guy when it comes to instituting rules and regulations. You know what I mean. “If you change X it will allow for Y and Z rules to be made, and the next thing you know we can’t carry concealed weapons in church”.

 

Well, I’m starting to wonder.

 

The FAA is proposing a requirement for all N registered aircraft to be re-registered (at a cost of $45, not the current $5), and then to go through this same process every three years. They think that as many as 1/3 (about 100,000) of the current registrations are not active. Of the remaining 240,000, they think 11.2% are inaccurate, or simply don’t contain the actual names of the owners. They further think this inaccuracy number would drop to 5.6% under the proposed process.

 

The FAA can’t process all their current paperwork in a timely fashion, so now they want to increase the administrative load by a factor of…well, I’m not a statistician, so I have no clue what the factor is. But it’s a big one!

 

And a 900% jump in registration fees? If GM tried that with the price of a car every politician down to a city councilman would stub their toe running to get ink on how they “oppose this as being anti-American and an affront to the middle class citizenry”.

 

While I’m ranting, how do you come up with 11.2% down to 5.6% inaccuracy while postulating that 33% of the current data base is incorrect? And, if you are going to jump the cost of doing business 900% shouldn’t you at least target 100% accuracy.

 

OK, I’m going back to sleep now. I’ll let you know next time something gets my dander up.
