In this introductory evening to a 4-part Global Summit, How To Academy and Oxford Analytica will be focusing on the future of the Great Powers.
Using the innovative and inspiring format of Oxford Analytica's flagship Autumn Conference, the expert speakers will explore if Global power, whether defined in economic, political, military, ideological or other terms, is slipping away from the countries, sources of ideas and institutions where it has been located for the past few decades.
Is it congregating around different countries, nodes, organisations and frameworks, some of them unfamiliar to us in the West? Do we now have few 'Great' powers and several 'big' ones, complicating the diplomatic landscape at a time of major global challenges?
Speakers
Graham Hutchings
MD, Oxford Analytica
Graham Hutchings undertook his first consulting assignment for Oxford Analytica in 1988 when he was China Specialist with London's Daily Telegraph newspaper. He spent 10 years based first in Beijing and then Hong Kong as the paper's China Correspondent, reporting on such major events as the suppression of the student-led protests in Tiananmen Square, China's economic takeoff and the return of Hong Kong to Chinese sovereignty.
Anand Menon
Professor of European Politics and Foreign Affairs, King's College London
Prior to his current position, Anand was Professor of West European Politics, and founding Director of the European Research Institute at the University of Birmingham. He has also served as University Lecturer in European Politics and Fellow of St Antony's College, Oxford. He has held visiting positions at New York University, Columbia University and the Universite Libre de Bruxelles, amongst others.
Desmond King
Professorial Fellow, Nuffield College, University of Oxford
Desmond King specializes in the study of the American state in US executive politics, race and politics in American political development, comparative welfare politics and labour market policy, democratization and immigration policy. Before coming to Nuffield in 2002, he was a Fellow and Professor of Politics at St John's College, Oxford of which he is now an Emeritus Fellow, and a Lecturer in Government at the London School of Economics.
