Re: Introductions
Hi Alex, Joi,
Wanted to start a conversation with the both of you.
Brief intros:
Alex, Joi is the Media Lab director & is helping us with the project as PI.
Joi, Alex is our primary donor & helped us organize the fundraising.
Joi & I are looking at putting on some kind of event/summit which brings together stakeholders (devs, gov, companies, & investors) to discuss cryptocurrencies implication in society, but from a slightly different angle (not just Bitcoin as is, but more of a look at what could be built & what crypto-backed features are enticing for all parties). This might be a great opportunity for Coin Center to collaborate on in getting such a summit off the ground; I'm sure there is commonality with some things you may already be working on. I'll defer to Joi to furnish more details on what he's been thinking so far & who he's been talking with.
Best,
Jeremy
Thanks for the intro Jeremy and nice to meet you Joi!
This sounds like a fantastic idea to me, and a great fit for MIT and the Media Lab.
Coin Center would be happy to collaborate on such an event. If you're interested, I should loop in Jerry Brito. If you're not familiar with him, I think he's fantastic and could provide a valuable contribution.
Alex
Hi Alex. I'm at a conference with Reid Hoffman and Wences. Wences mentioned being connected to you. Reid is interested in sponsoring this meeting as well.
I think the idea is to bring all of the various stakeholders including the devs, companies, regulators, etc. and having a meeting about the future of the business, technology and thinking about how the "system" will work in the future.
Would love your participation. We'll start working on sketching out a date and other details, but will coordinate with you.
- Joi
Joi,
I just wanted to put you in touch with Jerry Brito who runs Coin Center.
He will be the best person to coordinate with when you are ready.
Of course I'm happy to remain involved to the extent I can help!
Alex
Alex- Thanks for the introduction. Moving you to BCC.
Joi and Jeremy- It's good to make your acquaintance. Alex mentioned that you were interested in putting together an event or summit that would bring together top stakeholders from industry, government, and academia to look at the impact of cryptocurrency on society. Coin Center would love to partner with you on such an effort. Would you have some time over the next month to have a call to discuss it? Thanks for your time.
Best,
Jerry

I'd be happy to swing by MIT soon, most likely before or after November 24th and 25th (I'll be in Ontario for a Global Commission on Internet Governance meeting and am happy to pop down should schedules permit). These are tentative dates that will be firmed up next week when the Commission meets in Seoul.
Depending on the size of the eventual event, it would be my pleasure to organise a meeting in Hong Kong, perhaps at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in Sai Kung (that also has a convenient but much smaller in-town venue, just next to HSBC and the Hong Kong Club). Anyway, just possibilities at this point.
Cheers,

Super. I'm thinking of a two step process. Step one to have a small meeting at MIT sometime relatively soon and then a bigger meeting in Hong Kong to talk about the future governance stuff around bitcoin and crypto currencies. I'm coordinating a bit with the W3C payments working group that's getting set up. We should meet and discuss.
Adding Pindar who will also help with this.
Heather, can you help set up a meeting?
- Joi
Jerry/Pindar/Jeremy,
Which of the following dates work for you?
October 21
November 10, 11, 18, 20
Jerry, where are you based? Would you be able to meet at MIT or call in to the meeting? Thanks!
Heather
Thank you Joi and Heather.
I'm in Washington, D.C. I'm not available Nov. 10 or 11, but the other days I am free. Calling in would probably make the most sense for me if this is just an initial meeting to outline some ideas for a conference/summit.
Thanks!
Jerry
I'm now in Seoul. Shall we aim for a call (skype/google hangout) on October 31st then?
