Re: update

The Dean contacted me on the weekend and asked to have a phone meeting regarding conciliation this morning at 9. (Yes, I know my meeting last week was cancelled because the Dean was not in a position to negotiate.. ..). We had our phone conversation. He told me the University is ok for me to retire or resign, my preference, instead of being dismissed, as long as I do it by Dec 31st. My policy was to simply say oh.. let me consider this, can we talk again.. and we agreed to talk again on Wed. I asked about money, and he was unclear, although he said if I retired he thought I would get whatever retirement package there is.. which of course is nothing, and said he didn't think the university would be willing to give money (which goes against what the conciliation committee said he said when they met him, so maybe he simply doesn't know). I also asked him about a statement to save face.. since that was my other condition in the conciliation process.. namely to restore my reputation to some extent. He said he thought the university would come out with a brief statement saying I had decided to retire.. So basically, his first offer is nothing at all..

I am going to come up with a counter proposal and will give it to him on Wed and we will see what happens or whether we have to move forward to the next step.

Buzzfeed contacted me about the state press story, and I responded that I expected to have more information by friday or monday.

I agree that that's nothing. Honestly, I think you should bring me in now—the fact that I'm not calling their lawyer right now speaks volumes, and not in a good way for you. But again, totally your call.

I disagree. I think having me reach out to their lawyer and say essentially, what the hell, would be useful pressure that would be expected from anyone who might conceivably sue. If you're not having me make that call, she's smart enough to know that it's because you're worried about money, which means you are not a serious litigation threat. As I've said many times, I don't think you are a serious litigation threat, because I just don't think you want to spend the money, which is understandable. But they don't know that, and I think it would be useful to bluff this. Again, though, your call.

I think we should wait till I make my ask on wed and see how they react. Then it will be time to consider next action. Right now all I can quarrel about is procedure- why the cancelled meeting if I was going to speak to the dean anyway. I haven't yet given them my request. Anyway will touch base on Wednesday.
