I met today with Ms. Basama Kadmani, of the Syrian National Council, who is visiting New York to lobby members of the Security Council. I learned from her the followings: 1.The United States forbid Gulf States from providing the Syrian Free Army with the weapons necessary to effectively defend themselves. I advised them to pursue this matter with London; UK has more influence with Washington; 2. I inquired about the whereabout of Vice President Farouk Al-Shara. Ms. Kadmani said that he is, like all vice presidents, waiting in the shadow for orders from his his boss; she said that he "coward" and nothing daring is expected of him; 3.The SNC is now pondering its next strategy; for, the current political process has failed. The Security Council will not be able to end the violence and secure a political settlement; 4.The Syrian opposition is fragmented and the regime, through its many agents, has infiltrated it. There are so many military formations that are working independently from each other. In Idlib province, there are at least eighty military groups. In Douma, a small town in the outskirt of Damascus, there are many military organizations fighting the regular army without unified military command; 5.The Syrian National Council lacks the necessary resources to provide for the humanitarian needs of the refugees and buy essential arms for Syrian Free Army; and 6.The Syrian opposition look with trepidation at the growing strength of Wahabi Salfist movements and their disruptive rule.
