Re:
tim my assistant has decided to go to guatemala after you talked about it. she is copied on this suggestions.
FYI: It turns out I will not be in Palm Beach this month. We're going to Hawaii in January, but hope to see you when we get back. Best wishes for the Holidays.
As for Guatemala: Even though one arrives at the airport near Guatemala City, that's not an attractive place. We recommend going directly from the airport to Antigua. All told, this is one of the most culturally interesting places in the world and only a 5 hour flight from JFK. For things to do:
Visit Tikal, the most impressive Mayan city ever discovered (a one hour flight by small plane from GC airport, stay at La Lancha).
Antigua de Guatemala, a Spanish colonial city that was larger than any city in North America when it was abandoned in 1777 due to a threatened volcanic eruption that never occurred (stay at Pensativa House Hotel.)
Chichicastenango, a wonderful Indian market town (not to be missed on a market day - absolutely amazing on a religious holiday such as Easter. Stay at the Mayan Inn. See the churches and shop bargains!)
Lake Atitlan, a 1,600 ft. deep lake in the mouth of an extinct volcano with Indian villages, accessible only by boat, around it. (Stay at Hotel Casa Palopo.)
Tell your assistant that I'd be happy to answer any questions directly. I'll be reachable in NYC until Saturday and again after January 2nd. In between, I can be reached on my cell phone: (Unless one is adventurous, it's best to have a car and driver rather than rent a car for oneself.)
shame see you in Jan.
