Jonathan,

Erika Kellerhals (LSJ/GSJ representative) and I did site visits of both Little St. James and Great St. James yesterday, and it was brought to our attention that on Great St. James, two temporary barge landings were created post hurricane by the staff to assist in the delivery of emergency and relief supplies to the island. A significant number of staff had their homes destroyed or rendered uninhabitable by the storms and took refuge on GSJ.

One is near the location of the proposed new dock across from Little St. James and one is in Christmas Cove. Both are rock lined and rubble filled and extend approximately 10'-15' off shore. We are aware that these were not permitted. Despite repeated attempts, the staff were unable to reach anyone at DPNR prior to construction. Mr. Epstein understands that these will need to be removed but was concerned that if they were removed prior to your arrival that it might be misconstrued that he was trying to hide what was done. Should we go ahead and start their removal or would you prefer to conduct the site visit so you can make recommendations of how it should be done?

Amy,

Thank you for the update. There is no rush to remove the structures prior to our visit. It is my hope that we can find a resolution that addresses all unauthorized/non-compliant structures at the same time.

I feel that was a positive response.
