I am glad to hear that you decided to have surgery and, having chosen Dr. O'Leary. You will be in excellent hands!
To answer your questions:
The early recovery period (first 2-3 days) is determined by the extent of surgery and anaesthesiologic aspects. If everything goes normal the patient is able to get out of bed the same day or the day after surgery. You will most probably have to wear a cervical brace for a while, and, provided that there will be no complications you should be able to do office work after 7-10 days which also means that you should be able to travel. It will however take between 3-6 months until the fusion is completed.
This would be the postoperative course under normal/ideal circumstances but I am sure that Dr. O'Leary can give you more specific information.

Dear Dr. Mayer,
Thanks so much for your detailed response and advice regarding my medical condition. It is of tremendous help. On one hand I have five physicians (Internist, Shoulder, Neurologist, Surgeon, Radiologist) who I trust telling me to have surgery; on the other hand numerous clients of my literary agency are world-class scientists and MDs, and they have all been cautioning me against rushing into surgery without having another opinion. As Eric Kandel, a Nobel Laureate in Medicine, said, "You only have one neck, kid." Talk to someone else!
So now I have done so and feel comfortable in proceeding with the surgery and have left work with Dr.O'Leary's office to set up a schedule.
I do have one more general question: for either/both of the procedures you mentioned what would be a typical recovery period, i.e. when would I be able to (a) get back to the office and (b) travel.
