Why
(1) because it is being urgently requested from many =upportive organizations and individuals.
(2) =ecause it is the consensus of a wide variety of people, who may all be =rong while you are right, that saying nothing when accused of at this =evel.. not a single complaint by a single individual, but a =omprehensive story in a tabloid magazine, appears tantamount to =dmitting guilt.
(3) because what is in the =etter is true.
(4) because ultimately I have =o live with myself and Nancy and I have to feel we were a team in this =very important).
at this point, it =ppears that the firestorm is subsiding somewhat, and maybe even a =ot. It also appears that the haters may have exhausted themselves =ith yelling and other people are actually getting turned off and =eginning to counter them, angrily and otherwise.. as often =appens the debate ends up coming down in the middle somewhere after the =xtremists have vocalized their views.. so there is some argument for =etting the twitter sphere
just exhaust itself and move on to the next =hing. Indeed if I am interested in simply covering my ass and leaving =live with my tail between my legs, this may be the best =pproach.
But it is equally true that many many many of the =eople vocalizing support have all said that while most of the story is =earsay allegations, and none in any case involve sexual harassment, =hey are also saying that Lawrence Krauss has not had a chance, yet, to =efend himself. And exactly what I do in the future will depend =n this.. I expect you will say that this is true, but you will argue =hat my future will be better off if I do nothing.. but I cannot see not =esponding and I believe, based on what we are seeing, that waiting much =onger is strategically wrong.
Finally..
(5).. and wait for it.. because this is =oing to make you really want to yell at me, if we want to further =ilence Buzzfeed following up this, and maybe others as well, we may =eed to initiate a lawsuit (and against Gizmodo in australia, where =asically anyone can sue and win).
So.. I am not acting rashly.. I am =nitiating this discussion with you. Thinking rationally and =almly about exactly how to navigate this tightrope.. So.. we can =ave a conversation later. In the meantime Nancy and I are at =east going to go over the letter to try and tune it and wait for =dam's revision so we are prepared to act if we decide =o.
