Dumb dumb dumb
no. you risk being part of a vicious conversation. relax. AGAIN!!!, you will get more info the week after. you may need to incorporate.
what is the purpose for their request? it can be short. you deny, asu is looking into, and you are confident of the results.
The goal is to have statement out by Sunday. So if you need anything to help edit what I will send you tonight let me know.
Why
(1) because it is being urgently requested from many supportive organizations and individuals.
(2) because it is the consensus of a wide variety of people, who may all be wrong while you are right, that saying nothing when accused of at this level.. not a single complaint by a single individual, but a comprehensive story in a tabloid magazine, appears tantamount to admitting guilt. (3) because what is in the letter is true.
(4) because ultimately I have to live with myself and Nancy and I have to feel we were a team in this (very important).
at this point, it appears that the firestorm is subsiding somewhat, and maybe even a lot. It also appears that the haters may have exhausted themselves with yelling and other people are actually getting turned off and beginning to counter them, angrily and otherwise.. as often happens the debate ends up coming down in the middle somewhere after the extremists have vocalized their views.. so there is some argument for letting the twitter sphere just exhaust itself and move on to the next thing. Indeed if I am interested in simply covering my ass and leaving alive with my tail between my legs, this may be the best approach.
But it is equally true that many many many of the people vocalizing support have all said that while most of the story is hearsay allegations, and none in any case involve sexual harassment, they are also saying that Lawrence Krauss has not had a chance, yet, to defend himself. And exactly what I do in the future will depend on this.. I expect you will say that this is true, but you will argue that my future will be better off if I do nothing.. but I cannot see not responding and I believe, based on what we are seeing, that waiting much longer is strategically wrong.
Finally..
(5).. and wait for it.. because this is going to make you really want to yell at me, if we want to further silence Buzzfeed following up this, and maybe others as well, we may need to initiate a lawsuit (and against Gizmodo in australia, where basically anyone can sue and win).
So.. I am not acting rashly.. I am initiating this discussion with you. Thinking rationally and calmly about exactly how to navigate this tightrope.. So.. we can have a conversation later. In the meantime Nancy and I are at least going to go over the letter to try and tune it and wait for Adam's revision so we are prepared to act if we decide to.
you are right.. this means we should get the statement out BEFORE, not after..
2 reasons.
- we beat all the talk, and 2. all the talk about the academy awards will distract from some of possible response to a statement.
center for inquiry wants to have statement if possible before their board meeting 4 pm on Sat.. I think Sat release is good cause (a) weekends are slow, and (b) there will be lots of background chatter on other things the day of oscars..
I think they are going to decide both on whether I remain as an honorary director, and whether I speak at their meeting in October, and present the Richard Dawkins award to Stephen Fry, along with Dawkins, as I was last recipient.

If it is truly about that, I assume they must decline. I'd prefer no decision after looking.
