FW: Cartwright case
Hello, Ms. Ruemmler,
I hope this finds you well.
I cover national security issues at The Washington Post. We're preparing a =tory about the leak investigation into Gen. Cartwright and how it has stal=ed over concerns about exposing national security secrets and possibly com=licating the nuclear talks.
I'm reaching out because our understanding is that the your office - when y=u were White House counsel-- was unable to provide the information the pro=ecution felt necessary to bring the case.
The concern, as we understand it, was compromising sources and methods and =ivulging material that would confirm a covert joint operation. There were =lso significant diplomatic concerns - complicating the Iran negotiations a=d potentially upsetting an ally, Israel, if the information were revealed =n court.
Please let me know if you have any reason to doubt the accuracy of this. I =ealize this is a sensitive issue to comment on, but I would appreciate bei=g able to speak with you - even on deep background.
Thank you very much,
Ellen
