(Joan was Paula's cousin, Marvin's sister, and Abe and Helen Berlin's daughter (Frog's family bought their house on Surf Ave, where Paula and Seymour got married. Aunt Helen's dog was named Chips). Joan had some kind of leukemia. Probably had too much bologna at her father's Mermaid Ave butcher shop as a child.
