  1. Unlike machines that turn on when the switch is thrown, biological systems are default on. They attempt to stay on. The system of excitation and inhibition is not dissimilar from adjusting the speed of a car. To make it go faster, you can either put your foot on the gas or take it off the brake. Much of the early advances in medicine and psychology were during the industrial revolution, when machines were the examples. The body as a machine was the way to look and try to figure out what was going on. Hydraulics for muscle, cranes, joints, pulleys. For psychological issues, the machine and some of its terms became embedded in the system. Thinking like a well-oiled machine. Input, output, computation, memory.

The view was that a dream state was turned on when one fell asleep, the equivalent of going to the movies. What was on the screen was then analyzed, examined, frightened, amused. It was in a dark enclosed setup of a room. People were able to fly, etc. I think that there is another more biological system explanation. I postulate that dreams are ALWAYS on, running 24 hours a day. One gets to experience them when the screen of consciousness drops away. It is that consciousness sets a screen in front of the dreams. It takes energy to keep the consciousness screen continuous and opaque with respect to the dreams. If consciousness screen starts to fade, we can see behind and start to daydream. If we are unable to craft a screen with no holes, we are fine, but that takes energy and sleep to fill in the holes. Without sleep, the holes form and dreams start poking their way through. Schizophrenia is a person not being able to distinguish between dreaming and reality. He is walking in the street but he hears his mother. The neighborhood cat might speak to him. Things that everyone experiences in their dreams, the schizoid cannot tell the difference. His screen is damaged. The dreams behind the consciousness screen are tied to the emotions. Why am I in a bad mood? Could be because I am having a bad dream behind my consciousness screen, a feeling of dread, something happened in my dream, etc. It turns out that schizoids suffer sleep ailments. Sleep deprivation causes hallucinations (dreams while awake). The consciousness screen is tied to our senses, run through focus filters, with a feedback that in some instances are hard-wired, aversion, danger. It's the activity behind the screen that answers the complex questions. The aha moment is when the dream room sends its message to the consciousness room.

  1. Music, most animals make sounds. What does music represent? It is melody, prosody, information both vertical and horizontal. Chords, melody. As it is generated from the brain, can it be reverse-engineered and used to probe the workings of the machine that created it? Listening to a flute and its tonal quality from the sound analysis, a long empty tube can be postulated. But that's only its structure. Rhythms are a product of the player, not only the structure. Do German marches provide insight into a German mind? Is it organized, regulated, beats that range from 30 - 120 bpm? Do Afro-Americans think more like jazz, somewhat off the beat (humor, unpredictable movements making it harder for a German to tackle down the field)? Why do soldiers march further to music, runners run further? A symphonic structure is theme, repetition, variation on the themes, conclusion. The same dictum given to public speakers: tell them what you are going to say, say it, tell them what you said.

  2. Mathematics is the search for truth. Algorithms that do not change their result with the passing of the day. Mathematics stands outside of time. The ideal of a point or line (separate from Einstein's measurement issues as the actual measurement is much more difficult, requiring a beginning and an end, therefore measurement lives in time space). Mathematics is the search for truth. I postulate that Biology and biological systems differ from mathematics because it needs deception to survive. Biological systems only make sense in time space, trying to stay away from what is the moment of life or death. Predator-prey. Biological systems need free energy in order to maintain structure disintegrating from entropy. Energy needs to be ingested in order to fight the slope down to breaking apart and returning to dust. Getting energy, the most basic bio requirement. In bio systems, however, the best way to get energy is either from the sun, a limited chemical reaction, or heat gradient. The energy must come from outside. The way for systems to gain energy is to eat it. The way not to die is to eat and not be eaten. The game of eat or not be eaten is very sophisticated. What is the entity? The cell, the organ, the organism, the community, on and on. Hierarchical nested systems. At every level, decisions have to be made. Is it ok to sacrifice a few cells so that the organism can live? Which cells? Do they get a choice? How many, when? When the organism is eaten by its predator, how did it try to protect itself? Camouflage, surrounding itself in junk, mimicry, misdirection, misinformation, etc. Quorum sensing, game theory, free will, bait, ants.

  3. We have come a long way in surveillance and detecting and encoding and decoding communications between people, between computers. We can do this because we can pick out the words in text, embed it in a grammar space. We know the language. We need to do the same now for biology. What is the language of the cells? Do they communicate with proteins? What are they saying to each other? Is the language encrypted? Does each person have his own code? Is it chemical or electrical or both? Or physical like the shape of the protein fitting in a lock, or combination of all three? The protein fits, the electric is fired, etc. Does the brain send a message? What does medicine do? Does it fool the receiver, the sender, the listener? The history of telecommunications intercepts have a long history referring to Alice and Bob that would like to speak to each other, they encrypt their messages so that a listener cannot do damage. Why not attack the bio language the same way as speech? Have NSA work on decrypting the difference in signals from a cancer cell as opposed to a healthy one. We know that cells send out messages, am I in the right place? If they get no answer or the wrong answer, they are programmed to commit suicide. When a foreigner shows up in a neighborhood that is hostile, he is surrounded, killed, and moved into the trash. He can masquerade as a local. How can the other cells tell? Can they ask him who won the world series? Maybe an equivalent. Friend or foe? Decoding skills find it difficult to decipher if there is no repetition or action that is the result of the message. The famous example separate from Heil Hitler at the end of the message (anecdote or true). To break a code that was received from the Germans, the allies planted a bomb in three cities all set to blow at the same time. They thought that the word for bank or bomb would be in the message for the day, or so the story goes.

Money, what is it? Is it a mirage that disappears when you look too closely? Can you have money without debt? Is it an accounting system? What and whys of interest? Was it for small communities? With the same currency, what is the difference between currency and money? What is the meaning of value? Cost, market. What is a derivative, futures, stocks, bonds, options, convertibles? How does trust fit in? Can you have money with no trust, in each other, in an institution? What is credit? Is it different than money, social contract, reputation, economics, currency exchange, bitcoin, zero knowledge proof?

Intelligence? Speed of thought, algorithms, empathy, creativity, survival. Is it a limited resource?

Distributions, power laws, biological agents, networks. Is gravity merely a restoring force? Pareto, Zipf, normal. Why are things distributed? Central limit theorem, randomness, etc.

Power, physical, financial, intellectual, political, its uses, dangers.
