Re:
Mort, I write to you with a great deal of fondness, affection, and concern. I have known you for over 25 years. You can dismiss this letter out of hand, or take it as a true sign of caring. You and I met with Terje on Saturday at 4:30 pm. You might not remember. You asked that I help you. You might not remember. Your friends, including me, are very concerned that your cognitive impairment has now reached a serious and potentially dangerous level. There is serious concern for your financial, emotional, physical, and psychological safety.
I am aware that you have the best people working on the problem, however. I urge you in the strongest terms to voluntarily now put your affairs and your person into a guardianship, conservatorship, or a firm legal structure for your own protection. Terje, your nephews, and anyone else you trust should be given authority over your affairs. Your remarkable abilities are no longer enough to protect you. Your daughter and the people around you love you and only wish for the good. I am aware that your condition makes you prone to suspicion, but that being said, the future predictable decline will be an ever-increasing danger.
Admitting you have a problem will take courage and determination. You and I sat at Sloan Kettering when Abigail was ill. I made a pact with you that I would always tell you if things had gone too far. Well, here we are. Please do your best to find protection. Jeff
Do you have a lawyer with experience in such matters that I should engage and do what needs to be done? Thanks for thoughtfulness and friendship. It means everything to me and can we talk about these issues in depth? Best, Mort Z

No special lawyer. I suggest you form a structure that encompasses your needs. Suggestion: make Terje and Harry co-chairmen, Joel and Jamie guardians of children, Eric operations and finance. Health needs: Claire Irwin, etc.
