Re: ideas
not really, but we can talk about it.
you do not want to enter into any arrangement before your divorce is settled.
Nice to talk yesterday Jeffrey. Thanks.. I am starting the wheels moving on a possible meeting with Michael Crow in April to talk about possibilities.
On the other matter, I was thinking of ideas. The writing option is interesting, but from a logistical perspective it presents the following issue:
writing a GOOD 150-200 page document (assumeing $150K ish before taxes) is the equivalent of writing a new book.. which can be done of course, but in my experience takes about a year (if I am to continue my research activities etc), and is time consuming. Another alternative, which is useful (in general), but may not be attractive to you, but which equally uses those outreach skills with much less work, is to consider sponsoring a series of public lectures by me on a variety of subjects.. I have 5-7 different public lectures now, and could consider others.. , and they could be in florida, NY, or anywhere.. If the foundation paid me $25K per lecture, which is slightly higher than my previous max ($ISK), then 6 public lectures would be $150K.. and it would be interesting, useful, and much less work for me than writing a comprehensible explanation of various research programs (I was planning a book ultimately on our Origins programs). So, the question is, would this be of interest to you?

ok.. let's talk sometime.. am going to an evening event I have to speak at now.. we can talk on the weekend.. I will explain context of why I want to get this settled if possible soon.
I wrote Michael Crow a detailed letter and am hoping we can set something up for early April. I also just invited Nick Pritzker to be on outside advisory committee for Origins as well.

Jeffrey: It is interesting that you said that, because it is almost verbatim what my uncle said, who is also astute financially and a (well-off) business man.. but I could never explain to him my thoughts.. I think I can explain them to you, and I want to... His attitude was "you are never stronger negotiating than when you are at your weakest"... i.e. I could never make a better deal than when I have fewest resources to give... I realize that from a pure financial perspective this is true.. However, my interest is not in giving the least... my interest is in being fair and considerate to someone who was my partner for 30 years, and about whose well-being I still care a great deal. Kate invested time in our relationship and she doesn't deserve to be tossed away at a weak moment without any support.. I couldn't live with myself.. it will be far easier to create a clean break if my own finances are less uncertain and I can know that she can be provided for adequately.. Can you understand that? My interests are not diverging from hers.. but converging, in that I hope we both have her best interests at heart.. call me stupid.
