Re:
what day is the santa fe gathering?
Yes, there is and all day meeing at Santa Fe on Wednesday and a small symposium on Friday and Saturday in Tempe. It is all tightly scheduled and scripted. Through a collegue I suggested that you should be invited, but there was resistance- is there anything that I should know about here??? Maybe they just want to deal with one potential donor at a time for some reason???
to santa fe or tempo? No problem, I am a tough critic with a colorful past. and close to Murray Gellman,
Dear Jeffrey-
I've just looked into Tempe. Below are the people coming, and their topics:
Paul Davies: CosmologicalDirectionality Principles Eric Chaisson: Using Complexity Science to Search for Unity in the Natural Sciences Charles Lineweaver: A Simple Treatment ofComplexity: CosmologicalEntropic Boundary Conditions on Increasing Complexity Simon Conway Morris: Life—The FinalFrontier for Complexity?
Marcelo Gleiser: Emergent Spatiotemporal Complexity inField Theory Eric Smith: The Interaction of Diversity and Transience with Universality in the Complexity of the Biosphere David Krakauer: Enigmas in the Evolution of Biological Complexity William Wimsatt: The Evolution of Complexity—Mechanisms and Questions? Stuart Kauffman: Complexity Theory—Normal Science and Frontiers Classical andQuantum Philip Clayton: Why Theories ofComplexity are Too Simple— On the Relative Independence of Complexity-Producing Systems David Wolpert: Increase of Self-Dissimilarity, Information Theory, and the Increase of Complexity with Time Stephen Wolfram (?)
FYI, I'm attending as an invited guest, and they have told me that it is closed and I can't bring another guest to the symposium (I'm guessing that there is probably more to the story than they are telling me, but figured that I would just take a hint - who knows what is going on, and I'm too busy to figure it out). However, they were very gracious about it, and said that if you are in town to please join the evening program as a special guest with the entire group (Saturday, 7: 00 p.m until late) for cocktails, dinner, and discussions of new ideas. Up to you if it is worth your while, but it will probably be the place to have the most lively discussion anyway and I very much hope that you will be able to come. The venue is:
