Ten years ago Daniel Goleman, a science reporter on the New York Times, published a book called Emotional Intelligence which explored how emotions are regulated in the brain. Goleman hoped that his findings might filter into the culture and affect the ways in which we think about success. Today, the Harvard Business Review has hailed emotional intelligence as a 'paradigm-shattering' concept, and in schools across America EI has become part of the curriculum, with children being taught to respond empathetically to others, to identify what makes them stressed, and to explore the ways in which communication can resolve, rather than aggravate, conflict.
We are delighted to welcome Daniel Goleman to the How to Academy, to discuss with us the idea that has come to define our age.
Daniel Goleman's Emotional Intelligence was on The New York Times best sellers list for a year-and-a-half. Named one of the 25 "Most Influential Business Management Books" by TIME, it has been translated into 40 languages. HBR called emotional intelligence (EI) a revolutionary, paradigm-shattering idea. His follow-up, Working With Emotional Intelligence, outlined the vast importance of EI in any professional setting.
Since the publication of the book Daniel Goleman's thinking has transformed the way the world educates children, relates to family and friends, and conducts business. The Wall Street Journal ranked him one of the 10 most influential business thinkers.
