I did some work on Grief. I have a different view than the costly signal argument. I think it is disease prevention. Those that grieve were close to a dead person. Likely infected. Take them out of large group? Close contact triggers grief.

Fits the Black death, and more primitive societies, but not Victorian England when it was beneficial, common and attracted much needed help.
