After Bashar al-Assad crossed a "red line" by killing 1,400 Syrian people with nerve gas in 2013, rather than using airstrikes, Obama struck a deal with Russia to peacefully scale back Assad's arsenal. But in summer 2016, Assad's use of chemical weapons resurfaced as a threat.
Regardless of which route he goes, with Trump in the driver's seat for Middle East policy, the Syrian conflict may be on the verge of a sea-change.
