When I went to DC last week they dumped a major job on me with a deadline of Friday (and I leave on Saturday). So very unfortunately I won't be able to accept your kind offer of hospitality this week. Too bad as it has been quite a while since I visited you there! I hope to see you soon one way or another, either here or back East.

Yesterday there was a ceremony to rename the main building at SFI after Murray. It was quite touching: some reminiscences (I put in a few, and sang Murray a song: He is the very model of a modern Nobel Laureate), a brief appreciation speech by Murray, and then lunch. As you probably know, Murray is in pretty bad shape these days, sadly diminished in mental power and confined to a wheelchair. But he was on for this occasion, and it was touching.

Dear Jeffrey,

Sadly, Murray both has significant general decay of brain function (Alzheimer's or some such) together with Lewy's body syndrome, a gradual decline in muscle function. He's quite advanced on both fronts. It's hard to watch. He is well taken care of, though, and seems quite happy, except when he gets confused about what's going on.

I'm heading back to Cambridge next week so let us aim for September. (Most recent gathering at your institute was very fun.)
