I have no idea what they will ask you. Say you booked through your travel agent before you left ...come up with an emergency in st. petersburg.

we only booked that flight because it was less money to purchase the round trip. we never discussed you coming back!

Oh dear...well I am booking you a flight to St. Petersburg tomorrow

I purchased you a ticket to fly FROM Newark (the same airport you land at) tomorrow...you will have to wait quite awhile unfortunately...flight is not until around 5pm. As soon as I have the ticket I will forward.. You will not even leave the airport ...just tell customs you made an error and should not have taken the flight for work. you are returning straight away to St. Petersburg. You will have the ticket to show them.

You can eat a couple of hamburgers ... :)

so don't mention work. Say you came to visit a friend for a few hours but need to get to st. Petersburg for Christmas. (whatever you are comfortable with)
