Dear Dr. Tramo,

I hope this email finds you well.

I am writing to ask if you would once again do The Friends of Semel the honor of participating in an Open Mind program about music and the mind and brain on Thursday April 4th, 2019 at 7PM at the Melnitiz Theater (yes, we do plan ahead!).

We will be screening a feature-length documentary film, 'Orchestrating Change2 about the only orchestra in the world created by and for individuals with mental illnesses and the people who support them. It was founded by Ronald Braunstein, the Music Director and founder of the non-profit organization Me2/, who received his musical background at TheJuilliard School, Salzburg Mozarteum, Fontainbleau, and the Tanglewood Music Center. Immediately following graduation from Juilliard, he won the Gold Medal in the Herbert von Karajan International Conducting Competition and spent the following four years mentoring with Mr. Karajan. He has conducted the San Francisco Symphony, Oslo Philharmonic, Auckland Philharmonia, Israel Sinfonietta, Tokyo Symphony and Stuttgart Radio Orchestra.

Mr. Braunstein was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 1985. He launched the non-profit organization/orchestra Me2/because of his desire to support others who struggle to maintain good mental health. Caroline Whiddon, the Executive Director of Me2/(and now Ronald's wife), has more than two decades of experience in orchestra leadership. (More about both Caroline and Ronald attached.)

We are very excited that Ronald and Caroline will both be coming to UCLA for the screening and to participate in a discussion both about their film and orchestra and about the relationship of music to the mind and brain. With your vast expertise and unique knowledge of both music and neuroscience, we know that you would be the ideal faculty participant for this program.

Thank you so much, Dr. Tramo. Please let us know if you have any questions. We hope that you are available and will join us for an evening focused on music and neuroscience!

Warmest regards,

Vicky

Dear Vicky, The honor is mine - what a fascinating topic!

There is a relevant literature on creativity and psychopathology that we touch upon in my Music Mind & Brain seminar in the Music School and Interdepartmental Neuroscience program. There really is need for a Creative & Performing Arts Health Center based in part on the Sports Medicine model that has done so much to advance orthopedic surgery. Do you happen to know if Semel or Resnick have an artists' program?

Looking forward to April (already!)

Cheers,
Mark
