A message from SAXE MIDDLE SCHOOL

How is Saxe doing in this time of heightened concern around student/school safety?

It is a credit to our families and to the Saxe staff that our daily school business has continued to be productive and positive. After all, our children really just want to be children! Unfortunately, they are exposed to a wider world that families and schools continue to partner around, in order to help them understand and cope.

Our school mission highlights this joint partnering as a "learning community" with the essential ingredients of caring, communication and commitment Difficult re-affirming times test our every bonds community and reassuring while at our the children same time, can be comforting.

How can I discuss this with my child?

On a practical level, it is helpful to focus on what our children do have control over, especially during times when they may be feeling vulnerable to external forces that they do not control. Encouraging our children to practice daily habits of positive care for themselves and all others, along with an expectation that if they see/hear something tocommunicate that to you and to us at school. When our childrencommit to doing their very best, at home and at school, it "drives up" our collective positive school culture!

On a more conceptual level, please refer to the link below which offers further guidance around helping our children understand and cope with the wider world.

What is the school's position on national school walkouts?

Saxe has always acted as an apolitical, non-partisan public school. As such, we have not endorsed or participated in previous national march/protest days. However, we are proud of our past experiences supporting national days of honor and remembrance.

As of this writing, there are two calls for national action on behalf of students in school. One has identified only high school participation; the other has been silent as to the age of

participants. One organization has planned for Wednesday March 14 and the other for Friday April 20.

Saxe will continue to focus on giving our students appropriate channels to develop and express empathy, as well as, gratitude. Our recent "14 days of Kindness" campaign was led by San students in order to encourage everyone to add their portion of acceptance and positivity to the school culture.

What is being planned at Sate on the days designated for student walkout?

The Saxe administration is presently discussing a safe and student-centered approach for our school to appropriately express empathy for the victims of school violence, as well as, act with gratitude in order to increase the level of positive school culture as the spring semester progresses. Various 7th and 8th grade students are currently meeting with 7th grade administrator, Mr. Bedard and 8m grade administrator, Dr. Ferreira to formulate our approach. Once our plans are solidified, we will update all students and parents.

What else can I do as a parent?

Please use this email as a "springboard" to open up a conversation with your child. If our students understand that their family and school are in partnership in order to keep them safe and allow them the best environment to learn in, decision-making. more then they detail As will, to we share more near about likely, the walkout the practice planning dates, effective that we has will resulted have some from our various student and parent inputs.

We continue to remain available to you as your child's advocate. Please contact any member of our staffif you have a question or concern or just want reassurance. Our counselors and mental health staff are excellent resources in every school. Certainly if you see/hear something, please contact us so that we may arrange the necessary follow through. All of the reports from the Saxe staff, as well as, from our individual contacts with students, continue to indicate that our school community feels cared for and safe,

and therefore we arc able to successfully continue the complex and challenging work ofeducating your middle school-aged child!

With regards,

Greg Macedo

Saxe Principal

Just do it. Time heals. I will be very honest with them, I know I can. And I can do nicely. le I love Hunter, he is Ty best pal. But let them know how much he struggles even in practice. He need to have some success and to build his confidence back up. He is truly the size of some 5 grade kids.

Yes, I would encourage you to be honest, but use language that is nice...there are ways to say things directly and get the point across without completely sounding hurtful. As you say, Hunter is Ty's best friend and we want him and his parents
