Terje: I have been in touch with local sounies, including in the dangerous border areas as well across the border in Afghanistan. According to confidential sources, the 2 recent US drone attacks (first after Dec 2013) were undertaken in North Waziristan upon request of Pak Gem, aimed at the foreign militant. Further to my last email of 29 May, the Pak Army's policy of strikes has continued, more tribesmen have fled into Afghan provinces across the border as well as towards settled areas in Pakistan. Foreign militants in North Waziristan have crossed over into Afghanistan. This will destabilize Afghanistan just days before & after the 14 June runoff election. Interestingly, the provincial Govt of Khost Province across the border in Afghanistan has included the fleeing Pak tribal children in their polio program. However, administration of anti-polio drops to tribal children fleeing into settled areas in Pakistan has proved less organised, though I am assured that there will be targeted programs for these groups after a few weeks.

Meanwhile, although the world is waiting with bated breath for a full Pak Army operation in North Waziristan, my sources do not expect this, but massive strikes in parts only. This is also timed to play a "spoiler" role starts Kabul. More soon. nh
