...The gift will be used to create 160 Brockman scholarships — 40 a year starting in the fall of 2014 - for students planning to major in natural sciences, computational sciences or economics. The scholarships will pay for tuition, room and board, and also give the winners, chosen on the basis of merit, support for study abroad, summer research and internships. ...
I know what you're thinking. Why Kentucky?!!
But Seriously, in 1993, Arthur Rosenthal, who died two weeks ago, approached me about setting up the Brockman lectures, which would do for scientists what this Brockman is doing for students. Every two years we would pick the most important scientist-intellectual and commission them to do a major lecture series for serious money. Rosenthal, founder of Basic Books, then head of Harvard U. Press, would do the venue - anywhere we wanted in the world (Harvard, Cambridge, Moscow, Beijing, etc. - and we would live cast the lectures globally to be followed by a book in 30 languages.
