hi ■,
hope you are well. We saw an article tonight on someting called Radaronline reporting that Jeffrey Epstein attempted to commit suicide at the MCC (unsuccessfully.)
Are you in a position to help me on that with some sort of confirmation or information. (Or to dispel its veracity?) thanks, Ben

Hello,
It was good to see you yesterday. Thank you for accommodating my visit with Tartaglione and giving him extra time to review his discovery. We very much appreciate that.
I am writing to request the preservation of all video surveillance that captures the hallway outside of Tartaglione's cell on the date and time of the Epstein incident that is currently being investigated. I believe that the date and time is July 23 during the early morning hours. Accordingly, I would ask that all video surveillance from July 22 at 11 pm to July 23 at 4 am is preserved. If it is your understanding that the incident occurred at a different time, please let me know and preserve the relevant footage, including an hour before the incident and an hour afterwards. If the responding officers were wearing body cameras that captured the inside of the cell in the aftermath of the incident, I am requesting that such footage also be preserved.
We will be officially requesting this material through the appropriate means, but pleasiercousidu this Page 7314

Thank you.

Good morning Bruce,
Please be advised that this matter is currently the subject of an open investigation, and, thus, I am limited in what I can discuss at this time. I have not shared any information with the press or the public, and I am not aware of any other MCC staff doing so either. As this is an open investigation, no information can be shared with outside parties until the investigation is complete. Once the investigation is concluded, I will be able to provide you more information. I have reminded MCC administrators to caution staff that they are not to retaliate against your client or any inmate. Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns. Thank you,

■, as discussed, several options are below. Please note that we need to discuss timing of all this. I will need to let my Executive Staff know so they are not taken off guard as they will no doubt get a lot of questions from their staff and other wardens. Also note that the Warden just called Ray and told him the US Attorney is meeting with him at 10 am tomorrow. So this probably should be some time after that interview.
Preferred:
Today, the Bureau of Prisons placed two staff who work in MCC NY on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation in the apparent suicide of Jeffrey Epstein. Additional actions may be taken as the circumstances of the investigations warrant.
A more detailed version of above could read:
Today, the Bureau of Prisons placed on administrative leave the two staff who worked in the Special Housing Unit at MCC NY pending the outcome of the investigation in the apparent suicide of Jeffrey Epstein. Additional actions may be taken as the circumstances of the investigations warrant.
If a third staff member is added either version can be changed to read "three."
If the warden is added, the following is proposed:
The Bureau of Prisons also temporarily reassigned the MCC NY Warden to the Northeast
Regional Office pending the outcome of the investigation. FCI Otisville Warden James Petrucci
has been named Acting Warden of the MCC-NY.
While I prefer not to state the warden's name in this release, if you decide it needs to be added, his name is

Mike,
The email below is from one of two staff here that has been targeted by the New York Times soliciting information on Epstein via their personal email. I will monitor this closely and I have already put out an email to all staff on the media and who are the only approved staff that are allowed to speak to them. In addition the Warden held a recall today expressing the concerns if staff are sharing information and how it is prohibited. Please let me know your thoughts.
New York Times must be getting staff email addresses through social media outlets.

Hi [ ]
I hope this finds you well. My name is Christina Goldbaum and I'm a reporter with The New York Times. I'm sorry to reach out out of the blue, but at NYT we are working on a story about MCC and what happened to Jeffrey Epstein. We're trying to learn a little more about the prison and how it works internally (I hear there have been some issues with staffing, overtime etc), and I was wondering if you might be free for a quick chat on background (meaning that I will not use your name in any article, or anything that could identify you). I'd just like to learn a bit more about the prison itself -- there are a lot of rumors flying around, as you know, and we'd like to be able to speak in concrete terms about the prison from people who know it best. Please let me know if you're free or give me a ring: 212-556-7518.

Thank you. I will examine this more closely from a computer (hard to read on phone), but clearly the rate of suicides is increasing (as it is in the community), but it has gone up dramatically since 2010. A couple questions that perhaps we can discuss when we meet as described below.
Is it possible 2010 is so low because of poor data and reporting back then?
How does this increase compare to the rate in the community? How does it compare to state corrections?
As I've said, one of my priorities moving forward is suicide prevention, both staff and inmate (this started with my focus on staff suicides earlier this ear, Ion before a stein). Let's discuss a plan and project to work on this. It's something I've discussed with at different times this past year. I want to pull resources from across the bureau (other psychologists and ORE for example-at your discretion) to help on this and I have the Executive Staffs support and I'm sure I'll have the Director's support. Let's find a time to meet.
Thanks!

The attached spreadsheet has three tabs with counts on Attempts, Self Harm and Placement on Suicide Watch for all of our institutions between 2014-2018 and it was shared with IPPA.
This is a reporter's question sent to IPPA along with our response and my recommendation for adding more information.
(4) Also, does BOP have any special initiatives under way to help reduce the numbers? What is BOP's response to the union's contention is staffing shortages is at the root of the problem?

Inmate Message Below
Dr. - I just spoke with an inmate who came out of the SHU last night. His room was directly next to Epstein's and Brown was anxious to describe the night of his neighbor's death. Jeffrey Epstein definitely killed himself. Any conspiracy theories to the contrary are ridiculous. Brown actually heard Jeffrey tearing up his sheet before committing suicide. I asked Brown if the SHU had been extraordinarily noisy and uncivilized as a prelude to Jeffrey killing himself. He responded in the negative - effectively refuting my theory that Epstein couldn't take the animals in the SHU and chose to end it as a result. I no longer believe that rooming with Jeffrey would have saved him. He wanted to kill himself and seized the opportunity when it was available (when his bunky moved out). Such is life - or death in this case.
Friday is my home confinement date and clearly, the staff hasn't done its job although the law specifically states that the BOP is required to let all inmates with the appropriate risks and needs (which I am) serve 10% of their sentences at home. I know this isn't part of your domain. But anything you could do to get me out of here when the law says I should be released (two days from now) would be most appreciated.
Good morning all,
Per the above article, the Court was advised by the USAO that MCC did not preserve video from outside the cell shared by Tartaglione and Epstein at the time of Epstein's alleged first suicide attempt. However, per the attached, SIS advised the footage was preserved. What search for the footage was performed prior to advising the USAO the footage could not be found? I would recommend searching again for the missing video. I have a call with the AUSAs in 20 minutes and will advise as to what other issues arose at yesterday's hearing.
