Dear Jeffrey,
My life is charging ahead at full speed and I'm not always sure of where I'm going.
I hope things are well for you.
Much love,
Cecilia
Dubai Diary
I bought sandals for AED 149 ($40). Those of you who know me well, you can imagine how poor I am...
THE BEACH
One of the few free beaches in Dubai is right behind my building. However, I have to drive around all of Dubai due to bad infrastructure planning. I can't walk since that is dangerous:
1. I'm a woman
2. Pedestrians are usually killed in their first 2 blocks of walking.
The dirt road passing by the beach looks like a commercial for SUVs in compromising situations. Me and my Mitsubishi Galant have to be careful not to go on the fine Dubai sand, though. Even shallow sand can be nervwrecking to get out of. Not that I would be that stupid...
Going to the beach wearing spf 55. No, I'm not planning being near radiation!
WEATHER
+16 C
97% humidity
200 meters visibility due to heavy fog
= very extreme, strange weather
NON-DATING
I've moved on from both my ex's: The Shady one and the Normal one. It's a lonely life, but better than investing in something that will never last. It was pretty James Bondish to date my ex, though.
I do admit that I have seller's remorse over losing the Normal one. He was so good, but all wrong.
ALCOHOL LICENSE
On the alcohol license in Dubai, it says: "alcoholic license". Pretty hilarious.
FORMER SOVIET UNION HOOKERS
A girlfriend of mine from the former Soviet Union said I'm cheap because I didn't charge my ex for sex. I told her that charging for sex makes you a hooker. Where I come from, we are with someone because we're in love, not to get cash or "gifts".
Do you understand how backwards Dubai is??? In any other part of the world anyone who charges for sex is a hooker.
Another Russian friend is breaking up wiht her boyfriend because he doesn't want to give her credit cards and bigger allowance.
EXPAT CITY
According to a ranking, Dubai landed on 74th place in popularity of expat cities in the world. That's pretty freaken bad!
Reasons for super-poor ranking:
- Traffic - it's extremely annoying when you can see your house from your car for 45 min, but you can't reach it...
- Weather - nobody likes +45C
- Rent - nobody likes paying horrible rents for horribly poorly built apts
ONE OF THE MOST DEADLY HIGHWAYS
250 cars in horrific car accident between Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
INTERNATIONAL DATING SERVICE
I met a friend of a friend in Dubai visiting from New York. She wanted me to set her up with a friend of mine for business. They hit it off on a romantic level, though.
The hilarious part is that he's Palestinian (muslim like no other) and she's very Jewish (observes sabbath and the whole nine yards).
WHEN DO YOU LEAVE DUBAI?
A friend of mine who's been working here for 18 months is moving back to Canada. He realized that he will never achieve what he wants in Dubai. I realized that neither will I. It's not like I'm learning anything on the job unless you count copy & paste using a pre-historic stationary PC.
Since the cheapass company isn't paying for my laptop or home internet connection, I decided not to work outside of 8:30 am - 7pm.
The ONLY thing I will take away from Dubai is the travel experience, but ABSOLUTELY NOTHING professionally, personally or financially. However, I will never regret Dubai.
AXIS OF EVIL COMEDY TOUR ON DUBAI
"If it doesn't exist in Dubai, don't worry, it will next year."
"If we don't have it, we build it."
"We don't have the four seasons, so we build the four seasons. Not the hotel! The actual four seasons! Spring City, Fall City, and Summer City is just the normal outside. Winter city is the inside of a cab."
"Don't blame the Middle Easterns first. I mean, it usually is us, but not all the time."
RASHID AL HABTOOR (50th wealthiest Arab in the world)
Finally met the infamous bachelor billionaire who every girl in Dubai met- except for me until now. The New York girl brought me for dinner with him and his entourage. I got to ride in his Bentley.
Sometimes you just have to strap on that helmet, pray, hope for the best and jump.
