The memorandum sent to you was created from a previous memorandum. The date of the Memorandum should have been December 8, but the old date was inadvertently left on the memo.

I have to disclose to you something which I had wished to talk about in person, but I have been informed that you have not been on island for a while.

I have encountered a serious medical issue which has created havoc with my life which influences our operations here. I have had three total hip operations in the same hip. The last operation has now failed. During the last operation I had a saddle pulmonary embolism which should have killed me which creates some major issues if I am to have surgery again. The problem is painful. I am on crutches now. My wife and I are trying to obtain stateside opinions on the appropriate treatment and what my ultimate mobility will be.

I mention this not for sympathy, but to explain that this evolving problem has meant that we will need to make changes here to permit us to go ahead more effectively with our program given the uncertainty of the next 6 months for me personally.

You looked me in the eye and said that you wanted me to be right there to answer your needs. I said I would do so. I am not now, however, on top of my game, but that does not mean that this company cannot make this project go for you. My personal role, however, will have to reflect how and under what circumstances the health issues work out over the next few months. Your needs are immediate I have some individuals provided to me by our stateside management whom you should meet together with me to make sure these needs are satisfied. They will have to be brought up to speed.  I ask that you let me know when you are going to be available in Red Hook so that I can come to see you about this.

Over the past two to three weeks I have been trying to do too much at one time and it has resulted in some sloppiness which is unacceptable. I was distracted when I last wrote you and I made a dating error on the memorandum.  I want to make this entire situation work for you. I do not like telling someone this kind of personal detail, but I believe that you have generated a belief in my character and honesty and your belief should be rewarded with candor about an issue which affects your interests.

I have obtained strong support in this company from Maine which has said to me: “how can we help you, John.”  This program will stay in place to serve you and our other clients. I have always had the back up of support and staff here which you have not seen. I should like to show you what that is and will be over the course of this project.  

Let me turn to your specific questions:

The schedule which was attached to the e mail shows the correct date of the deliverables and construction. As the note mentions the schedule is subject to review and discussion given the evolution of the designs. I must note that we have not concluded the negotiations of a construction phase contract and that is influencing the deadlines.

Two recent reviews have shown that building permit of the shed requires some engineering, the fees for which have to be approved; I can explain the problems posed when the steel supplier went over its design with the Maguire Group. The building permit for the shed can be submitted in two weeks.  A proposal for engineering fees for this work has to be approved. I am sending it to Darren and Rich today.

The library CZM permit was submitted on November 29 in accordance with the schedule previously given. It is under review.

Yesterday I received indications that the CZM permit for the indoor pool and the locker room are about to be approved. I was promised a quick building permit review by Mr. Hodge once those permits are applied for. We are in excellent shape in the permit review process.

The master plan which was enclosed with the misdated memorandum shows when the site utilities work is contemplated.
