Static research figures brought to life in F1000Research |
A research article published recently in F1000Research could redefine how we think about the 'Figure' in scientific publishing. While traditional static figures can become outdated, in a new article by Faculty Member Björn Brembs and Julien Colomb, figures 3 and 4 are actually dynamic bundles of code and data that generate images and can be updated through reader interaction or the addition of new data, respectively.
The authors report the finding that not all Drosophila melanogaster control strains are equal, suggesting that results obtained from separate labs may not always be comparable or reproducible. Other researchers can now attempt to replicate the study using a virtual machine provided by the authors and, significantly, add their data to the 'living' figure in the F1000Research article. For more details on these dynamic figures, please read F1000Research's and the author's blog posts.

Advances in managing breast cancer: a clinical update
Although more sensitive, MRI computer-aided detection of breast cancer is generally considered too expensive for women who are not high risk. However, newer MRI screening protocols are being developed, which cost about the same as ultrasound.
