FIRST DRAFT A sample letter......Dear Mr Kjaer, We at Isalnd GLobal attended the hearing , re garding your proposed development of Great ST, James.. We were quite disturbed by your intentions . We are sure that as you have little or virtually no ties to the virgin islands community, you are unaware of the degradation to the community that you propose.. We as a business , fully sympathize with your right to have a profit motive in developing the island.. This profit however should not come from the pockets of the local residents. Great ST. James and it's surrounding sanctuary have been a premeir tourist attraction and locak resident pleasure center for years. Your plan to benefit off the backs of the locals , can only be as a result of your lack of knowledge with the respect to the island. Christmans Cove, and its local harbor and world class diving attraction, would be forever altered, with the only gain being your persoal financial benefit. WE as a local company
cannot sit by, and watch a local treasure be plundered . AT the hearing , this message was spoken loud and clear by the local various preservation societies , and many were quite disturbed to witness the statement by one of the representatives that the czm was approved , but an official who immediately denied that fact.. AS a local co. , that has emplyed 500 people, and has invested aver 100 million dollars in the economy, we are , as the locals dependent on keeping our waterways pristine.WE unlike you have a long term interest in the enviornmental impact of such a overreaching development. During your public presentaion it said that you have only paid 27,000 per year in taxes.. our records show that these have not been paid, in the last three years.. In addtion you ask the local gov;t , to destroy one of its treasures , and suggest, they will get up to 300,000 a year after you ring out every last dime from the local enviornment simply to take those monies back to Europe
, and not be heard from again.. Our aleternative proposal is as follows.. AS you have invested nearly 2.5. million in the property, in 1986, we at I G Y.. will buy from you the island for 9 million dollars and then immediately donate it to the people of the V.I. , in order to preserve it's natural beauty.. We will also provide and additional 1 million dollars to restore it, maintain it , catalogue it's unique treasures, and then make it more accesssible for local recreation alone. AS we are sure the public outcry to your attempted looting of one of our natural beauties, was embarassing to you, as it was to your represenatives, we would propose , for at least 90 days, to keep this proposal , non-public and confidential. We hope that as you ponder the future of this glorious island, you will decide to forego your ill-advised plans, and recognize the fultility of proceding along that path, and put the needs and the rights of the local virgin islanders ahead of your personal
gain at the expense of our community.......OR something like it..
