Subject: Re: Fwd: RESEARCH PROPOSAL

Dear Elkhonon,

Please see attached a sketch of the possible project, very brief and informal of course. As you see, it is heavily skewed to my own research, but I hope you will see how we can integrate it with your ideas.

Regarding the possible logistics, I think there are two basic options if this is to be based at Weizmann. One is what we talked about on the phone, namely a grant to two of us for a collaborative research, which would allow us to have a small group of students/postdocs at Weizmann and some funds for travel etc. This would be a most straightforward and relatively modest investment, say 100-200K per year for 2-3 years. The more ambitious thing to do would be to set up a comp. neuroscience center at Weizmann, with me as a director and you as an external co-director/adviser. We are talking now about few million USDs as an endownment. The advantage would be that we could use some of the money to fund theoretically-motivated experiments in one of the labs here or beyond. For example, we have cutting-edge labs doing FMRI and optical imaging that could do experiments for us. The issue is then how to make sure that this center remains under our control for a reasonable period of time and not taken over by Weizmann and given to smbd else - this would probably require some serious negotiations between you and our administration, and would naturally take some time. I could try to learn more about it if/when you think it is relevant.

Best wishes
Misha
