I will be back in the states , first week of may, you and i should sit down,, we need a few groups whose task will be well defined. I believe I will be able to fund four or five. a competition for the result that is best able to search solution space.- ----- Original Message ----

Sounds excellent...

The weeks of May 5 and 12 I'll largely be traveling, but we might be
able to find a day where we're both free; just let me know the
specifics of your schedule when you know it...

The week of May 19 however I'm totally free, so if it doesn't happen
before then, we can perhaps get together then..

I'm really looking forward to proceeding with this!

The funding style you suggest seems much like DARPA-style actually.
Commonly DARPA will fund a number of groups to carry out "Phase 1"
research, and then chooses the best one or two to carry on to Phase 2.

Another interesting possibility is, if all the groups are to work on
using AI to control embodied agents in virtual worlds, one could fund
an additional group just to build the virtual world, based on
specifications agreed on and collaboratively discussed by all the AI
groups. This could be really important, because for various niggling
technical reasons, none of the current virtual world platforms are
really ideally suited for AI, though they get closer each year...

Commercial video game platforms tend not to be highly scriptable,
which is bad in terms of customizing them for AI purposes.

More appropriate are virtual world platforms ... not Second Life,
which is technically really irritating to work with for various
reasons, but platforms like Multiverse (commercial) or OpenSim (free,
open-source). These offer the same basic functionality as game
engines, but are made with customizability in mind.

As an example of what would ideally like in a virtual world platform
for AI, consider the issue of actuation.

Controlling physical movements of AI agents in video games or current
virtual worlds is generally done pretty crudely. Either

a)
each agent is given a fixed set of animations (raise arm, step
forward, nod head, etc.) and can run only these animations

or

b)
inverse-kinematic equations are solved for particular classes of
movements, like arm-grasping movements

Both of these options are quite crude, and don't allow for much
perceptual-motor coordination. How important this is for AI is
another question: some AI folks think that cognitive processing
largely proceeds via analogy to sensorimotor processing, others think
it's largely separate.

On the other hand, there are robotics simulators like
Player/Stage/Gazebo, which let you control the specific movements of
specific servo-mechanisms inside simulated robots. These are used
within the robotics community. But, they don't provide a rich,
expansive, configurable virtual world for AI learning and social
interaction, in the manner of virtual worlds or game worlds like
Second Life, Multiverse, OpenSim, World of Warcraft, etc.

So, one project needful of doing is to integrate a robotic simulator
(like Player) into a virtual world (like OpenSim). This is not
extremely hard, but it's many man-months of work ... not something you
do in your spare time. But it would allow fine-grained motor control
of AI agents in socially rich simulated worlds.

This is one example of something that would be done by an "AI
environment building team", separate from any specific AI team.

The AI minds built by the various AI teams would then all interact via
occupying similarly controlled (but potentially different-looking)
bodies living in the same simulated environment...
